The confinement properties of the diffusive running sandpile are characterized by tracking the motion of a population of marked grains of sand. It is found that, as the relative strength of the avalanching to the diffusive transport channel is varied, a point is reached at which the particle global confinement time and the probability density functions of the jump-sizes and waiting-times of the tracked grains experience a sudden change, thus revealing a dynamical transition, that is consistent with previous studies (Newman DE et al., Phys Rev Lett 2002;88(20):204304). Investigation of complexity dynamics in a DC glow discharge magnetized plasma using recurrence quantification analysis

Recurrence is an ubiquitous feature which provides deep insights into the dynamics of real dynamical systems. A suitable tool for investigating recurrences is recurrence quantification analysis (RQA). It allows, e.g., the detection of regime transitions with respect to varying control parameters. We investigate the complexity of different coexisting nonlinear dynamical regimes of the plasma floating potential fluctuations at different magnetic fields and discharge voltages by using recurrence quantification variables, in particular, DET, L{sub max}, and Entropy. From theoretical and modeling points of view, following Lagrangian trajectories is the most straightforward way to characterize the transport dynamics. In real plasmas, following Lagrangian trajectories is difficult or impossible. Using a blob of passive scalar (a tracer blob) allows a quasi-Lagrangian view of the dynamics. Using a simple two-dimensional electrostatic plasma turbulence model, this work demonstrates that the evolution of the tracers and the passive scalar field is equivalent between these two fluid transport viewpoints. Potential for quantification of regionally altered myocardial perfusion by analysis of rubidium and thallium mean transit times in the rabbit heart

Quantitative estimation of regionally altered perfusion could result in improved clinical care for patients with coronary artery disease. We hypothesized that myocardial blood flow (F) and mean transit time (T{sub mtt}) should vary reciprocally for potassium analogs, such as rubidium and thallium, based on the relationship V{sub d}/F=T{sub mtt}. Twelve isolated blood-perfused rabbit hearts were studied at flows ranging from 0.7 to 2.92 ml/gm min{sup -1}. Bolus injections of Rb-83, Tl-201 and I-125 albumin were followed by subsequent venous ampling for 20 to 30 minutes.
