Lenses allow the formation of clear images in homogeneous linear media. Holography is an alternative imaging method, but its use is limited to cases in which it provides an advantage, such as three-dimensional imaging. In nonlinear media, lenses no longer work. The light produces intensity-dependent aberrations. The reverse propagation method used in digital holography to form images from recorded holograms works even in Kerr media [M. Tsang, D. Nonlinear propagation of a high-power focused femtosecond laser pulse in air under atmospheric and reduced pressure

This paper examines the propagation of focused femtosecond gigawatt laser pulses in air under normal and reduced pressure in the case of Kerr self-focusing and photoionisation of the medium. The influence of gas density on the beam dimensions and power and the electron density in the plasma column in the nonlinear focus zone of the laser beam has been studied experimentally and by numerical simulation. Post-filamentation propagation of high-power laser pulses in air in the regime of narrowly focused light channels

We report the results of experimental and theoretical studies of the post-filamentation stage of nonlinear propagation of high-power pulsed radiation from a Ti : sapphire laser in air. We have for the first time obtained the experimental dependences of the angular divergence of specific spatially localised high-intensity light structures that are observed in the beam after its multiple filamentation (post-filamentation of channels) when varying the initial focusing of laser radiation and its energy. It is found that the angular divergence of the post-filamentation channels decreases with increasing pulse energy and reducing beam numerical aperture. Propagation of femtosecond terawatt laser pulses in N{sub 2} gas including higher-order Kerr effects

Propagation characteristic of femtosecond terawatt laser pulses in N{sub 2} gas with higher-order Kerr effect (HOKE) is investigated. Theoretical analysis shows that HOKE acting as Hamiltonian perturbation can destroy the coherent structure of a laser field and result in the appearance of incoherent patterns. Numerical simulations show that in this case two different types of complex structures can appear. It is found that the high-order focusing terms in HOKE can cause continuous phase shift and off-axis evolution of the laser fields when irregular homoclinic orbit crossings of the field in phase space take place. Formation of extended plasma channels in a condensed medium upon axicon focusing of a femtosecond laser pulse

The formation of plasma channels of a femtosecond laser pulse in the bulk of fused silica is studied by numerical simulation, and the advantages of using a conical lens (axicon) over conventional parabolic lenses are shown. It is found that the length of the plasma channel formed with the help of an axicon exceeds the length of the channel formed upon lens focusing.
