Direct evidence for a transition from elastic to plastic dynamics in the vortex system of YBa{sub 2}Cu{sub 3}O{sub 7{minus}{delta}}

Partial magnetization loops have been performed in order to study history effects in high quality detwinned YBa{sub 2}Cu{sub 3}O{sub 7{minus}{delta}} single crystals. The obtained results have disclosed a transition within the vortex system from a dislocation-free Bragg glass to a disordered vortex phase. This boundary has been mapped in the field-temperature phase diagram and found to lie in the vicinity of the onset of the second magnetization peak. The effect of decreasing oxygen deficiency is shown to be the shift of this line to higher fields. Elastic-plastic and phase transition of zinc oxide single crystal under shock compression

The Hugoniot data for zinc oxide (ZnO) single crystals were measured up to 80 GPa along both the 〈112{sup ¯}0〉 (a-axis) and 〈0001〉 (c-axis) directions using a velocity interferometer system for any reflector and inclined-mirror method combined with a powder gun and two-stage light gas gun. The Hugoniot-elastic limits of ZnO were determined to be 10.5 and 11.5 GPa along the a- and c-axes, respectively. The wurtzite (B4) to rocksalt (B1) phase transition pressures along the a- and c-axes are 12.3 and 14.4 GPa, respectively. Elastic-plastic transition in copper crystals as determined by an etch-pit technique

Copper (99.999%) crystals with a dislocation density of 50/mm² were prepared. These crystals were stressed by applying a pure bending moment, and they were etched with a dislocation etch either before and after or while the stress was applied. The motion of dislocations was determined by observing the size and nature of the dislocation etch pits. The resoIved stress necessary to move grown-in dislocations was about 4 g/mm². A theory describing the mechanism of triaxial behavior of rocks in underground formations is developed for the purpose of analyzing underground stress conditions. A phenomenon of an abrupt transition from elastic to plastic states of rocks under triaxial compression is anticipated from the theory, which is verified by laboratory experiments simulating conditions in underground formations. Based on the theory and experimental results, a method for determination of static underground stress field is proposed, and the existence of the plastic state and the boundary of transition in underground formations are predicted.
