Synthesis of Supported Pd⁰ Nanoparticles from a Single-Site Pd²⁺ Surface Complex by Alkene Reduction

A surface metal-organic complex, (-AlOx)Pd(acac) (acac = acetylacetonate), is prepared by chemically grafting the precursor Pd(acac)(2) onto gamma-Al2O3 in toluene at 25 degrees C. The resulting surface complex is characterized by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), and dynamic nuclear polarization surface-enhanced solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (DNP SENS). This surface complex is a precursor in the direct synthesis of size-controlled Pd nanoparticles under mild reductive conditions and in the absence of additional stabilizers or pretreatments. Promoting role of Fe in enhancing C/sub 1/-C/sub 2/ oxygenate formation from CO+H/sub 2/ catalyzed on SiO/sub 2//sup -/ supported Rh, Ir and Pd

Fe-addition to Rh, Ir and Pd provides a significant effect to improve selectivity of MeOH and EtOH owing to suppression of methanation and dramatically enhance the MeOH yields in CO hydrogenation. Studies of Mossbauer, EXAFS and IR in CO chemisorption suggest the unique roles of cationic Fe which resides on Rh, Ir and Pd particle surfaces to control the ensemble sizes of metal atoms, being reflected in modification of elementary steps having different site requirements for the oxygenate formation from CO+H/sub 2/.
