Observations of microstructural changes associated with UO/sub 2/ burnup from 3.5 x 10/sup 20/ to 31.3 x 10/sup 20/ Fiss/cm/sup 3/ (1.5 to 13.4 at.% burnup) at 1940 deg F or less are described. There was subdivision of the grains in the higher end of the burnup range investigated; the subdivision started between 12.9 x 10/sup 20/ and 16.9 x 10/sup 20/ Fiss/cm/sup 3/ and was complete at 23.2 x 10/sup 20/ Fiss/cm/sup 3/. The physical behavior of fission product impurities in irradiated uranium dioxide fuel is reviewed under two main headings, which are: the processes and kinetics governing the escape of fission products from uranium dioxide, both during irradiation, and also on subsequent out-of-pile heating; and the physical and microstructural changes produced by the fission products retained in the fuel. In many areas of the subject the experimental data are limited or contradictory and no final conclusions are possible. Some experiments to rectify the situation are suggested. (auth)
