The influence of time, temperature, and grain size on indentation creep in high-purity nanocrystalline and ultrafine grain copper

Microhardness measurements have been carried out on high purity Cu samples with average grain sizes ranging from ~10 to ~200 nm, over temperatures from liquid nitrogen to ambient, and dwell-times of the indenter in the sample from 5 s to 39 h. The Vickers hardness diminishes approximately linearly with the logarithm of the dwell-time. At short dwell-times the hardness increases significantly with decreasing grain size and with decreasing temperature, but the influence of these variables substantially diminishes at longer times. Investigation by transmission electron microscopy shows that rapid grain growth under the indenter most likely is responsible for the strongmore » and long-lasting indentation creep.« less

Progress on a High Sensitivity, High Purity, One-Electron-One-Proton Search for the MiniBooNE Low Energy Excess in the MicroBooNE Detector

Technical Report

MicroBooNE is a large liquid argon time projection chamber (LArTPC) located at Fermilab. One of the experiments primary aims is to investigate the CCQE-like excess of ν_ϵ events observed by MiniBooNE at low energy. A novel approach to analyzing LArTPC data using an amalgam of Deep Learning and traditional algorithms has been developed and is capable of end to end reconstruction and selection. We report here an overview and progress to event selection which yields greater than 99.999% rejection of backgrounds. Statistical, flux, and some cross section systematics have also been evaluated. Flexible woven SiC ceramics are prone to accelerated fiber embrittlement under high temperature oxidation in dynamic oxygen environments. The nanocrystalline structure of the constituent fibers impacts the reaction kinetics and phase transformations during active oxidation. However, fundamental understanding and quantification of grain boundary effects on oxidation behavior in nanocrystalline SiC remain elusive when temperatures exceed 1500 K.
