Establishing how and when large N/Z values require modified or new theoretical tools is a major quest in nuclear physics. Here we report the first measurement of the lifetime of the 2{sup +}{sub 1} state in the near-dripline nucleus {sup 20}C. The deduced value of {tau}{sub 2{sup +}{sub 1}} = 9.8 ± 2.8(stat){sup +0.5}{sub -1.1}(syst) ps gives a reduced transition probability of B(E2;2{sup +}{sub 1}{yields}0{sup +}{sub g.s.}) = 7.5{sup +3.0}{sub -1.7}(stat){sup +1.0}{sub -0.4}(syst) e{sup 2}fm{sup 4} in good agreement with a shell model calculation using isospin-dependent effective charges.

Search for $2 ν β β$ decay of ${}^{136}{Xe}$ to the $0_{1}^{+}$ excited state of ${}^{136}{Ba}$ with the EXO-200 liquid xenon detector

EXO-200 is a single phase liquid xenon detector designed to search for neutrinoless ββ decay of ¹³⁶Xe to the ground state of ¹³⁶Ba. We report here on a search for the two-neutrino ββ decay of ¹³⁶Xe to the first 0⁺ excited state, 0⁺₁, of Ba136 based on a 100 kg yr exposure of ¹³⁶Xe. Using a specialized analysis employing a machine learning algorithm, we obtain a 90% CL half-life sensitivity of 1.7×10²⁴ yr. We find no statistically significant evidence for the 2νββ decay to the excited state resulting in a lower limit of T^2ν_1/2 (0⁺ → 0⁺₁) > 6.9 ×10²³more »« less

Determining the $r p$ -Process Flow through ${}^{56}{Ni}$ : Resonances in ${}^{57}{Cu} (p, γ) {}^{58}{Zn}$ Identified with GRETINA

An approach is presented in this paper to experimentally constrain previously unreachable (p,γ) reaction rates on nuclei far from stability in the astrophysical rp process. Energies of all critical resonances in the ⁵⁷Cu(p,γ)⁵⁸Zn reaction are deduced by populating states in ⁵⁸Zn with a (d,n) reaction in inverse kinematics at 75 MeV/u, and detecting γ-ray-recoil coincidences with the state-of-the-art γ-ray tracking array GRETINA and the S800 spectrograph at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory.
