We study vacuum tunneling of non-Abelian gauge theory directly in Minkowski space. We do this by constructing a family of field configurations which connects vacuums of different winding numbers and which satisfies conditions necessary and sufficient to produce maximum tunneling amplitude. Using these explicit configurations we obtain explicitly the potential-energy barrier in winding-number space, through which tunneling occurs. We finally discuss the possible connections among the tunneling solution, the classical solution, and the full quantum-mechanical solution to the field equations.

Measurements of the intrinsic quantum efficiency and absorption length of tetraphenyl butadiene thin films in the vacuum ultraviolet regime

A key enabling technology for many liquid noble gas (LNG) detectors is the use of the common wavelength shifting medium tetraphenyl butadiene (TPB). TPB thin films are used to shift ultraviolet scintillation light into the visible spectrum for detection and event reconstruction. Understanding the wavelength shifting efficiency and optical properties of these films are critical aspects in detector performance and modeling and hence in the ultimate physics sensitivity of such experiments. Properties of the new $$ \mathcal{N} $$ = 1 AdS₄ vacuum of maximal supergravity

The recent comprehensive numerical study of critical points of the scalar potential of four-dimensional N = 8, SO(8) gauged supergravity using Machine Learning software in [1] has led to a discovery of a new N = 1 vacuum with a triality-invariant SO(3) symmetry. Guided by the numerical data for that point, we obtain a consistent SO(3) × Z₂-invariant truncation of the N = 8 theory to an N = 1 supergravity with three chiral multiplets. Critical points of the truncated scalar potential include both the N = 1 point as well as two new non-supersymmetric and perturbatively unstable points not found by previous searches. High resolution in situ imaging of metal surfaces during annealing and/or current transport is of great interest both for the application of metal lines in electronic devices and for extending our basic knowledge of the related complex physical phenomena. Due to its high resolution, the scanning tunneling microscope (STM) is a promising tool for in situ investigations of the structural changes of metals with respect to temperature (annealing) and current transport (electromigration).
