We discuss the generalization to curved spacetime of a path-integral formalism of quantum field theory based on the sum over paths first going forward in time in the presence of one external source from an in vacuum to a state defined on a hypersurface of constant time in the future, and then backwards in time in the presence of a different source to the same in vacuum. Generalization of McVittie's model for an inhomogeneity in a cosmological spacetime

McVittie's spacetime is a spherically symmetric solution to Einstein's equation with an energy-momentum tensor of a perfect fluid. It describes the external field of a single quasi-isolated object with a vanishing electric charge and angular momentum in an environment that asymptotically tends to a Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker universe. We critically discuss some recently proposed generalizations of this solution, in which radial matter accretion as well as heat currents are allowed. Two studies in relativistic cosmology: Smoothing spacetimes via Ricci flow and the Bel-Robinson energy in Gowdy T(sup 3) times R spacetimes

Two separate studies are contained. The first study is concerned with approximations to cosmological spacetimes. The standard model of cosmology is based on the Friedman-Robertson-Walker spacetimes; these spacetimes are the spatially homogeneous and isotropic solutions of Einstein's equation. The idea of smoothing provides a framework for the use of Friedman-Robertson-Walker spacetimes as approximations to more realistic inhomogeneous spacetimes. An explicit smoothing procedure is examined which is based on smoothing initial data via the Ricci flow equation.
