Phonon anharmonicity of monoclinic zirconia and yttrium-stabilized zirconia

Inelastic neutron scattering measurements on monoclinic zirconia (ZrO₂) and 8 mol% yttrium-stabilized zirconia were performed at temperatures from 300 to 1373 ωK. We reported temperature-dependent phonon densities of states (DOS) and Raman spectra obtained at elevated temperatures. First-principles lattice dynamics calculations with density functional theory gave total and partial phonon DOS curves and mode Grüneisen parameters. These mode Grüneisen parameters were used to predict the experimental temperature dependence of the phonon DOS with partial success. However, substantial anharmonicity was found at elevated temperatures, especially for phonon modes dominated by the motions of oxygen atoms. Thermal expansion and phonon anharmonicity of cuprite studied by inelastic neutron scattering and ab initio calculations

Inelastic neutron scattering measurements were performed with a time-of-flight chopper spectrometer to observe phonons in all parts of the Brillouin zone of a single crystal of cuprite Cu₂O. We reduced the experimental data to phonon dispersions in the high-symmetry directions, and changes between 10 and 300 K are reported. In this paper, we show ab initio quasiharmonic (QH) and anharmonic (AH) calculations of phonon dispersions. We performed all AH calculations with a temperature-dependent effective potential method. In this addendum the dielectric screening and the phonon frequencies are calculated using the isotropic noninteracting s-d-band model for fcc and bcc metals. The isotropic noninteracting-band models for nonrelativistic Pd and Pt are constructed considering three principal symmetry directions (100), (110), and (111), while for vanadium we construct the isotropic noninteracting band model considering three principal symmetry directions (100), (110), and (111), and three off-symmetry directions (310), (311), and (221). The contributions to the dielectric matrix epsilon (q + G, q + G), which arise due to intraband and interband transitions are calculated using the formalism of the previous papers.more »« less

A study was made of the role of the proportion of two-phonon components in the wave functions for the first and second vibrational states with given K/sup ..pi../ in even-even deformed nuclei. The calculations were performed with the one-particle energies and wave functions for the Saxon-Woods potential; three one-phonon components are incorporated. It is found that the first vibrational states having K/sup ..pi../ not equal to 0/sup +/ are virtually one-phonon ones. The proportions of two-phonon components are more important for the second states.
