{beta}-Secondary and solvent deuterium kinetic isotope effects have been determined at 25 {degrees}C for the alkaline and acid-catalyzed hydrolysis of penicillanic acid. In order to determine the former isotope effect, [6,6-{sup 2}H{sub 2}]dideuteriopenicillanic acid has been synthesized. In alkaline solution, the former isotope effect was found to be 0.95 {plus_minus} 0.01. These values support the B{sub AC}2 mechanism of hydrolysis with rate-determining formation of the tetrahedral intermediate that has been proposed for other {beta}-lactams. The measured {beta}-secondary kinetic isotope for the acid-catalyzed reaction was 1.00 {plus_minus} 0.01. The effects of liquid water and 1,4-dioxane on the hydrodeoxygenation of propionic acid over Pd(211) model surfaces have been studied from first principles. Here, a microkinetic model with parameters obtained from density functional theory and implicit solvation models was developed to study the effects of these solvents on the reaction mechanism and kinetic parameters. In the presence of water, dehydrogenated derivatives of propionic acid and propionate are stabilized, and a new decarboxylation mechanism involving CH₃CCOOH surface species is facilitated, leading to a higher decarboxylation rate. A recent study of the acid-catalyzed decarboxylation of the carbonatotetrakis(pyridine)cobalt(III) complex ion showed there to be rate acceleration in D/sub 2/O solvent, consistent with a proton-preequilibration mechanism. This observation directly contradicts the results of a similar study made some years ago of the analogous ion, carbonatobis(ethylenediamine)cobalt(III), for which there appeared to be deceleration in D/sub 2/O solvent.
