Spinel LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 (LNMO) provides a high working potential as a cathode material for lithium-ion batteries. Yet there is a phase transition from cubic to tetragonal structure in LNMO during the ~3 V charge/discharge region. To suppress the large volume change and capacity fade inherent with bulk-sized LNMO particles when discharged to below 3.0 V, one-dimensional nano-structured LNMO was prepared by an electrospinning method and a subsequent heat treatment. Insights into the Enhanced Cycle and Rate Performances of the F-Substituted P2-Type Oxide Cathodes for Sodium-Ion Batteries

A series of F-substituted Na_2/3Ni_1/3Mn_2/3O_2-xF_x (x = 0, 0.03, 0.05, 0.07) cathode materials have been synthesized and characterized by solid-state ¹⁹F and ²³Na NMR, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and neutron diffraction. The underlying charge compensation mechanism is systematically unraveled by X-ray absorption spectroscopy and electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) techniques, revealing partial reduction from Mn⁴⁺ to Mn³⁺ upon F-substitution. It is revealed that not only Ni but also Mn participates in the redox reaction process, which is confirmed for the first time by EELS techniques, contributing to an increase in discharge specific capacity. The research of the Office of Naval Research grant at UCSB focused on the research concerns of mechanical properties of fiber reinforced metal matrix composites as well as the understanding of microstructural development in polycrystalline Al2O3 fibers synthesized from liquid precursors. It has been closely coordinated with the DARPA/ONR URI program dealing with the design of high performance composites.
