High-resolution electron microscopy investigation of capacity fade in SnO{sub 2} electrodes for lithium-ion batteries

Nanocrystalline SnO{sub 2} thin films have been cycled electrochemically vs. a lithium electrode. They have shown a reversible capacity of about 400--500 mAh/g over more than 100 cycles. However, a capacity fade usually occurs after a few hundred cycles. A high-resolution electron microscopy (HREM) investigation has shown the decomposition of SnO{sub 2} crystallites into 10 to 50 nm wide tin grains during the first cycle as previously reported. Capacity fade in high energy silicon-graphite electrodes for lithium-ion batteries

A silicon-graphite blended anode is paired with a high capacity LiFePO₄ reference/counter electrode to track irreversibility and lithium inventory. The LiFePO₄ electrode provides a reliable, flat potential for dQ dV^-1 analysis of Li_xSi and Li_xC electrochemical reactions. We can relate this electrochemistry to the morphological and physical changes taking place.

Chalcocarbogels as High-Capacity and Cycle-Stable Electrode Materials for Lithium and Sodium Ion Batteries

The low capacities of commercial Li ion batteries and cycle instabilities of amorphous metal sulfide based batteries impose constraints on their utilization for large-scale energy storage. We report here the acid-free, room-temperature (RT), and solution-based synthesis of a chalcogenide–carbonaceous hybrid aerogel, termed as “chalcocarbogel”, comprising molybdenum sulfide (MoS_x) and graphene oxide (GO). The chalcocarbogel is a nanoparticle-aggregated, porous, amorphous gel consisting of Mo₃S₁₃ and Mo₂S₁₂-like structures as determined by synchrotron X-ray PDF, XANES, and EXAFS. Synthesis and optimized formulation for high-capacity manganese fluoride (MnF₂) electrodes for lithium-ion batteries

Electrochemical activity of poorly conductive metal fluorides in Li-ion batteries is contingent on their nanostructuration to reduce diffusion lengths and increase reaction kinetics. In that regard, we optimize the synthesis and electrode formulation of MnF₂ to enable sufficient electrochemical activity required to study its electrochemical conversion reaction mechanism.
