Inter-Coulombic decay (ICD) resonances in the photoionization of Cl@C₆₀ endofullerene molecule are calculated using a perturbative density functional theory (DFT) method. This is the first ICD study of an open shell atom in a fullerene cage. Three classes of resonances are probed: (i) Cl inner vacancies decaying through C₆₀ outer continua, (ii) C₆₀ inner vacancies decaying through Cl outer continua, and (iii) inner vacancies of either system decaying through the continua of Cl-C₆₀ hybrid levels, the hybrid Auger-ICD resonances. Comparisons with Ar@C₆₀ results reveal that the properties of hybrid Auger-ICD resonances are affected by the extent of level hybridization.

Photoionization of Xe inside C{sub 60}: Atom-fullerene hybridization, giant cross-section enhancement, and correlation confinement resonances

A theoretical study of the subshell photoionization of the Xe atom endohedrally confined in C{sub 60} is presented. Powerful hybridization of the Xe 5s state with the bottom edge of C{sub 60} pi band is found that induces strong structures in the 5s ionization, causing the cross section to differ significantly from earlier results that omit this hybridization. The hybridization also affects the angular distribution asymmetry parameter of Xe 5p ionization near the Cooper minimum. First-principles prediction of optical second-order harmonic generation in the endohedral N-C{sub 60} compound

Non-linear-optical properties in C{sub 60} have attracted enormous attention for over two decades. The endohedral complex N-C{sub 60}, with its remarkable thermal stability and spin-quartet ground state, is a candidate for future room-temperature quantum computing, but there has been no investigation of its non-linear-optical properties. Here, a first-principles calculation shows that N-C{sub 60} is a promising material for nanoscale and ultrafast modulations. Excitation by a pump laser pulse of the nitrogen-atom vibration inside the C{sub 60} cage transiently breaks inversion symmetry and can enable second-harmonic generation (SHG) from a probe pulse. Electron-capture decay rate of {sup 7}Be-C{sub 60} by first-principles calculations based on density functional theory

Carrying out a first-principles calculation assuming linear relationship between the electron density at Be nucleus and the electron-capture (EC) decay rate, we explained why {sup 7}Be-C{sub 60} shows higher EC decay rate than {sup 7}Be crystal, which was originally found experimentally by Ohtsuki et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 93, 112501 (2004)]. From the results of the calculation, we found that there are inequivalent four stable (i.e., lower energy) Be sites inside C{sub 60} and that center of C{sub 60} (C{sub C60}) is the most favorable site. Decay of hollow atoms in Ne{sup 10+}-C{sub 60} collisions

We have studied the decay of hollow atoms formed in Ne{sup 10+}-C{sub 60} collisions at low energy (E=100 keV). The decay products of hollow atoms, i.e., the scattered projectiles and the number of ejected electrons from autoionization cascades, have been measured. The projectile energy loss has been analyzed as a function of the final charge state, in order to differentiate collisions at large distance, near the C{sub 60} through the electronic clouds and inside the C{sub 60} cage.
