Numerous studies have been concerned with the possibility of a reduction of the stratospheric ozone layer. Such a reduction could lead to an enhanced penetration of ultraviolet (UV) radiation to the ground, and, as a result, to damage in the case of several biological processes. It is pointed out that the distributions of many trace gases, such as ozone, are governed in part by transport processes. The present investigation presents a two-dimensional photochemistry-transport model using the residual circulation. Search for Long-Lived Doubly Charged Higgs Bosons in pp Collisions at {radical}(s)=1.96 TeV

We present a search for long-lived doubly charged Higgs bosons (H{sup {+-}}{sup {+-}}), with signatures of high ionization energy loss and muonlike penetration. We use 292 pb{sup -1} of data collected in pp collisions at {radical}(s)=1.96 TeV by the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. Observing no evidence of long-lived doubly charged particle production, we exclude H{sub L}{sup {+-}}{sup {+-}} and H{sub R}{sup {+-}}{sup {+-}} bosons with masses below 133 GeV/c{sup 2} and 109 GeV/c{sup 2}, respectively. In the degenerate case we exclude H{sup {+-}}{sup {+-}} mass below 146 GeV/c{sup 2}. All limits are quoted at the 95% confidencemore » level.« less

Biological after-effect and long-lived free radicals in irradiated seeds

Biological damage in irradiated barley seeds was measured as damage to seedling growth, survival of the seed to a mature plant, chromosomal aberrations, or mutation. The various damages were found to be related. It is postulated that the biological after-effect in irradiated dry seeds is due to decay of the long-lived free radicals, derived from radicals initially generated by the radiation, and persisting after the irradiation is over. Results are reported from studies on the effects of various treatments, such as water, oxygen, other gases, and temperature, on postirradiation free radicals and on the after-effect phenomena in irradiated barley seed.more » (C.H.)« less
