Previous work on code benchmarks has focused on numerical comparisons to experiments or other codes. Recently, analytical benchmarks have been applied to codes that solve the Boltzmann transport equation deterministically. It is also of interest to apply these analytical benchmarks to codes that produce the solution from simulated stochastic processes (Monte Carlo). The MCNP code is a multipurpose, coupled neutral, and charged-particle Monte Carlo transport code. Analytic expressions are obtained for nonrelativistic high-energy three-dimensional continuum wave functions (at small distances) and phase shifts in smoothed screened-Coulomb potentials of the form V(r) = -ag(lambdar)/r, where a = Z..cap alpha.., with ..cap alpha.. the fine structure constant, and lambda is a small parameter characterizing atomic screening (lambdaapprox. =..cap alpha..Z/sup 1/3/).
