L1(0) FePt thin films with an island-like morphology and magnetic perpendicular anisotropy were grown at low temperature (300 < T-dep< 375 degrees C) by magnetron sputtering on Hoya glass substrates using a 30-nm thick Cr (2 0 0) underlayer. An MgO buffer layer with a thickness of 2 nm was used to inhibit the diffusion from the Cr underlayer and promote the growth of (0 0 1) oriented L1(0) FePt films by inducing an in-plane lattice distortion. Magnetic anisotropy and order structure of L1{sub 0}-FePt(001) single-crystal films grown epitaxially on (001) planes of MgO, SrTiO{sub 3}, and MgAl{sub 2}O{sub 4} substrates

L1{sub 0}–FePt(001) single-crystal films were grown epitaxially on SrTiO{sub 3}(001), MgAl{sub 2}O{sub 4}(001), and MgO(001) substrates. Their uniaxial magnetic anisotropy K{sub u} and the order structure were examined for the film thickness t range of 2–14 nm. All series of films show large K{sub u} of 4 × 10{sup 7} erg/cm{sup 3} in the thickness range higher than 10 nm, with order parameter S of 0.8 and saturation magnetization M{sub s} of 1120 emu/cm{sup 3}. Influence of quenching rate on the microstructure and magnetic properties of melt-spun L1{sub 0}-FePt/Fe{sub 2}B nanocomposite magnets

The quenching rate, which is dependent on the surface velocity (V{sub s}) of Cu wheel during melt spinning, has significant influence on the formation of nanocomposite structure in the Fe{sub 52}Pt{sub 32}B{sub 18} melt-spun ribbons. The L1{sub 0}-FePt/Fe{sub 2}B hard magnetic nanocomposite structure was formed at V{sub s}=20-37 m/s, while the soft magnetic fcc-FePt+amorphous phases were formed at V{sub s}=40-50 m/s. The ribbons melt spun at V{sub s}=37 m/s exhibit in-plane coercivity ({sub i}H{sub c})=760 kA/m, remanence (B{sub r})=0.71 T, and energy product (BH){sub max}=93.4 kJ/m{sup 3}. Effect of Au cap layer on the magnetic properties and the microstructure for FePt thin films

We have investigated the effect of interfacial diffusion on the magnetic properties of Au/Fe{sub 51}Pt{sub 49} bilayer thin films. The samples were prepared in two stages. First, an ordered Fe{sub 51}Pt{sub 49} continuous thin film was sputtered on a quartz substrate. Then an aurum cap layer was deposited onto the Fe{sub 51}Pt{sub 49} film at room temperature, followed by a postannealing at 300-800 deg. C to promote the interfacial diffusion. A high coercivity of 23.5 kOe was achieved in the isotropic polycrystalline FePt-based film. Effects of Ag underlayers on the microstructure and magnetic properties of epitaxial FePt thin films

In this work Ag underlayers, with a slightly larger unit cell than FePt, were found not only to induce epitaxial growth of the FePt films but also to reduce the FePt ordering temperature. Without using the Ag underlayer, the FePt film deposited onto the Si substrate was fcc disordered. By the use of the Ag underlayer, it was observed that the FePt unit cells were expanded in the film plane. This has caused the shrinkage of the FePt unit cells along the film normal direction and resulted in the in situ ordering of the FePt thin film at reduced temperatures.more »« less
