The low-phosphate part of the SiO/sub 2/-Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/-Fe/sub 2/O/sub 3/-RO-R/sub 2/O-P/sub 2/O/sub 5/ system (the system) was examined with a constant content for the sum of the akalis and alkaline earths and with different ratios. The x-ray amorphous state was checked with a diffractometer an the structures were examined by electron microscope using shadowed platinum-carbon replicas and IR spectroscopy. Replacing SiO/sub 2/ by P/sub 2/O/sub 5/ results in a heterogeneous structure; x-ray phase analysis showed that high-alkali compositions had microheterogeneosity due to crystals of phosphates.

The phosphorus content in hot metal will increase in future, because iron ores are steadily deteriorating in quality. Na{sub 2}O addition to slag is considered an effective method for increasing the efficiency of dephosphorization. The authors have examined the phase equilibrium, glass crystallization and glass-formation regions for four sections in the system Na/sub 2/O-La/sub 2/O/sub 3/-Y/sub 2/O/sub 3/-P/sub 2/0/sub 5/: La(PO/sub 3/)/sub 3/-NaPO/sub 3/; Y(PO/sub 3/)/sub 3/-NaPO/sub 3/; La(PO/sub 3/)/sub 3/-Y(PO/sub 3/)/sub 3/, and LaP/sub 5/O/sub 14/-YP/sub 5/O/sub 14/. For getting information about the way in which the structural units presented in glass matrices P{sub 2}O{sub 5}centre dotLi{sub 2}O (M{sub 1}) and P{sub 2}O{sub 5}centre dotCaO (M{sub 2}) are modifying with the substitutions Li{sub 2}O with CaO, these glasses where investigated by Raman spectroscopies. The absorption bands obtained and their assignments for each those two matrices are summarized. The influence of Fe{sub 2}O{sub 3} content on the structure of M1 and M2 matrices was followed.
