Characteristics of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) and soot formation in counterflow diffusion flames of methane, ethane, propane, and ethylene fuels mixed with dimethyl ether (DME) have been investigated. Planar laser-induced incandescence and fluorescence techniques were employed to measure relative soot volume fractions and PAH concentrations, respectively. Results showed that even though DME is known to be a clean fuel in terms of soot formation, DME mixture with ethylene fuel increases PAH and soot formation significantly as compared to the pure ethylene case, while the mixture of DME with methane, ethane, and propane decreases PAH and soot formation. High resolution (Doppler-limited) near-infrared spectra of several hydrocarbons and other light molecules of atmospheric significance were surveyed and catalogued using a unique difference-frequency laser spectrometer. Such spectra can be applied to the detection, identification, and quantitative monitoring of molecular air contaminants using lasers or other high-resolution spectroscopic instruments. Presented here are the complete Doppler-limited spectra of the complex and rich C-H stretching bands of formaldehyde (H2CO), ethylene (C2H4), ethane (C2H6), and allene (C3H4).
