Low-energy electron diffraction study of a disordered monolayer of H sub 2 O on Pt(111) and an ordered thin film of ice grown on Pt(111)

We have used a new low-energy electron diffraction (LEED) detector, that features a low beam current electron gun, to investigate for the first time the LEED intensities arising from a water-surface adsorption system. H{sub 2}O adsorption structures are very sensitive to electron radiation damage. A disordered monolayer of H{sub 2}O molecules is formed on Pt(111) at 160 K. Upon further exposure an ordered multilayer film is grown that yields new diffraction spots. Ionizing radiation tolerance of high-performance SiGe HBTs grown by UHV/CVD

The ionizing radiation tolerance of high-performance SiGe HBTs, grown by UHV/CVD and optimized for 77 K, has been investigated for the first time. Results at both 300 K and 77 K indicate that this SiGe technology is inherently radiation tolerant without additional processing steps. Perimeter-to-area analysis show parallel shifts in the collector and base current density for total radiation doses below 1.0 Mrad(Si). Relatively minor degradation in the current gain characteristics is observed for SiGe HBTs exposed to 1.0 Mrad(Si) of Co{sup 60} gamma radiation, indicating that the technology is robust for many applications requiring a high degree of ionizingmore »« less

Ferroelectric properties and crystalline structures of BaMgF{sub 4} thin films grown on Pt(111)/SiO{sub 2}/Si(100)

Crystalline quality and ferroelectric properties of (120)-oriented BaMgF{sub 4}(BMF) films grown on Pt(111)/SiO{sub 2}/Si(100) and n-Si(111) substrates have been investigated. The BaMgF{sub 4} films grown on Pt(111) have large and flat grains, while the films on Si(111) have small grains. The C-V curve of BaMgF{sub 4}/Pt(111)/SiO{sub 2}/Si(100) diodes showed a hysteresis loop with a memory window of 3.8V.
Preparation and structure of 1--8 monolayer thick epitaxial iron oxide films grown on Pt(111)

Well ordered epitaxial iron oxide layers with FeO stoichiometry were grown onto Pt(111) single crystal substrates and characterized afterwards with low-energy electron diffraction (LEED) and Auger electron spectroscopy. They were prepared by first depositing iron from the vapor onto the substrate and then oxidizing it in 10[sup [minus]6] Torr of oxygen. At 1 monolayer coverage, a very stable structure with a hexagonal unit cell 15% larger than the platinum (1[times]1) substrate unit cell is formed, exhibiting a threefold symmetric LEED pattern.
