Celestial current algebra from Low’s subleading soft theorem

The leading soft photon theorem implies that four-dimensional scattering amplitudes are controlled by a two-dimensional (2D) U(1) Kac-Moody symmetry that acts on the celestial sphere at null infinity (I). This celestial U(1) current is realized by components of the electromagnetic vector potential on the boundaries of I. Here, we develop a parallel story for Low's subleading soft photon theorem. It gives rise to a second celestial current, which is realized by vector potential components that are subleading in the large radius expansion about the boundaries of I. The question of the existence of the soft-photon expansion and its connection with the derivation of the soft-photon theorem is studied. We find that the soft-phonon expansion does not necessarily exist for all possible bremsstrahlung cross sections, and if such an expansion does not exist for some types of cross section, then the soft-photon theorem cannot be derived for them. We define two different classes of bremsstrahlung cross section for our study, which we call the H-type cross section and the R-type cross section. Electromagnetic bremsstrahlung in hadronic collisions was studied extensively at low and intermediate energies. It was found that the infrared divergent term of the cross section describes the data well up to surprisingly large photon energies. Using essentially the same soft photon approximation, production of low mass-low energy electron pairs via internal conversion of soft virtual bremsstrahlung accompanying the production of charged hadrons in hadron-hadron collisions at very high and intermediate energies. The resulting electron yields explain, at least in part, the direct electrons with small transverse momenta seen at the ISR, and are in no contradiction to the rates observedmore » at LAMPF.« less
