We estimate the probability that a hard nucleon-nucleon collision is able to nucleate a seed of quark-gluon plasma in the surrounding hot and dense hadronic matter formed during a central collision of two large nuclei at AGS energies. The probability of producing at least one such seed is on the order of 1--100 %. We investigate the influence of quark-gluon plasma formation on the observed multiplicity distribution and find that it may lead to noticeable structure in the form of a bump or shoulder.

Probing the space-time structure of quark and gluon transport in proton-nucleus collisions at collider energies

The [radical][ital s] and [ital A] dependence of ultrarelativistic [ital pA] collisions for energies corresponding to future collider experiments at RHIC and LHC is studied with focus on medium effects that affect the parton evolution in nuclear matter. Within the parton cascade model the saturation of the parton densities due to unitarity conservation, the self-contained balance of parton emission and fusion processes, and the mechanism of dynamical screening of long range interactions are analyzed. The resulting inclusive spectra and properties of secondary hadrons are discussed in order to extract aspects of QCD in medium'' from collider experiments.

$Λ$ and $\bar{Λ}$ spin interaction with meson fields generated by the baryon current in high energy nuclear collisions

We propose a dynamical mechanism which provides an interaction between the spins of hyperons and antihyperons and the vorticity of the baryon current in noncentral high energy nuclear collisions. The interaction is mediated by massive vector and scalar bosons, which is well known to describe the nuclear spin-orbit force. It follows from the Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation and leads to a strong-interaction Zeeman effect. The interaction may explain the difference in polarizations of Λ and Λ¯ hyperons as measured by the STAR Collaboration at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. Transverse-mass [ital M][sub [perpendicular]] dependence of dilepton emission from preequilibrium and quark-gluon plasma in high energy nucleus-nucleus collisions

The dependence on invariant mass [ital M] and transverse momentum [ital q][sub [perpendicular]] of lepton pairs emitted by quarks during the early stage of central collisions between gold nuclei at [radical][ital s] =200[ital A] GeV is investigated within the parton cascade model. For fixed transverse mass [ital M][sub [perpendicular]] between 2 and 3 GeV, the spectrum is thermal shaped at low [ital q][sub [perpendicular]] and exhibits a power law behavior at larger [ital q][sub [perpendicular]].
