Domain wall motion driven by spin Hall effect—Tuning with in-plane magnetic anisotropy

This letter investigates the effects of in-plane magnetic anisotropy on the current induced motion of magnetic domain walls in systems with dominant perpendicular magnetic anisotropy, where accumulated spins from the spin Hall effect in an adjacent heavy metal layer are responsible for driving the domain wall motion. It is found that that the sign and magnitude of the domain wall velocity in the uniform flow regime can be tuned significantly by the in-plane magnetic anisotropy. These effects are sensitive to the ratio of the adiabatic and non-adiabatic spin transfer torque parameters and are robust in the presence of pinning andmore » thermal fluctuations.« less

Charge transfer-tuned magnetism in Nd-substituted Gd₅Si₄

We report a charge-transfer mechanism in tuning of magnetism of Nd-substituted Gd_5-xNd_xSi₄ (x = 1 and 2.5) compounds. The X-ray absorption near edge structure measurements demonstrated that Nd substitutions for Gd induce charge transfer of 5d electrons from Gd to Nd. The charge transfer weakens spin-orbital coupling of Gd but strengthens that of Nd. Consequently, the magnetization responses of the substituted compounds to low magnetic fields are increased while their saturation magnetization is reduced. Pressure tuning of the magnetic transition in Gd{sub5}(Si{sub 0.375} Ge{sub 0.625}){sub 4}giant magnetocaloric effect material.

The effect of hydrostatic pressure on the ferromagnetic ordering transition of the monoclinic Gd{sub 5}(Si{sub 0.375}Ge{sub 0.625}){sub 4} giant magnetocaloric effect compound was investigated using x-ray magnetic circular dichroism measurements in a diamond anvil cell. The Curie temperature T{sub C} increases linearly with applied pressure up to {approx}7.2 GPa, at which point a discontinuity in dT{sub c}/dP occurs. This discontinuity, which appears when T{sub C} reaches {approx}277 K, is also observed when the unit cell volume is reduced by Si doping and is associated with the volume-driven monoclinic (M) to orthorhombic [O(I)] structural transition.

Interfacial tuning of chiral magnetic interactions for large topological Hall effects in LaMnO₃/SrIrO₃ heterostructures

Chiral interactions in magnetic systems can give rise to rich physics manifested, for example, as nontrivial spin textures. The foremost interaction responsible for chiral magnetism is the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI), resulting from inversion symmetry breaking in the presence of strong spin-orbit coupling. However, the atomistic origin of DMIs and their relationship to emergent electrodynamic phenomena, such as topological Hall effect (THE), remain unclear.
