A beam imaging detector was developed by coupling a multi-strip anode with delay line readout to an E×B microchannel plate (MCP) detector. This detector is capable of measuring the incident position of the beam particles in one-dimension. To assess the spatial resolution, the detector was illuminated by an α-source with an intervening mask that consists of a series of precisely-machined slits. The measured spatial resolution was 520 um source FWHM, which was improved to 413 um FWHM by performing an FFT of the signals, rejecting spurious signals on the delay line, and requiring a minimum signal amplitude. One-dimensionality in atomic nuclei: A candidate for linear-chain $α$ clustering in ${}^{14}C$

During the clustering of particles in atomic nuclei, the self-organization of various geometrical arrangements at the femtometer scale are produced as a result. Furthermore, the one-dimensional alignment of multiple a particles is known as linear-chain structure, evidence of which has been highly elusive. Here, we show via resonant elastic and inelastic a scattering of a radioactive Be-10 beam that excited states in the neutron-rich nucleus C-14 agree with recent predictions of linear-chain structure based on an antisymmetrized molecular dynamics model.
