Bilayers of amphiphiles can organize into spherical vesicles, nanotubes, planar, undulating, and helical nanoribbons, and scroll-like cochleates. These bilayer-related architectures interconvert under suitable conditions. Here, a charged, chiral amphiphile (palmitoyl-lysine, C₁₆-K₁) is used to elucidate the pathway for planar nanoribbon to cochleate transition induced by salt (NaCl) concentration. In situ small- and wide-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS/WAXS), atomic force and cryogenic transmission electron microscopies (AFM and cryo-TEM) tracked these transformations over angstrom to micrometer length scales. AFM reveals that the large length (L) to width (W) ratio nanoribbons (L/W > 10) convert to sheets (L/W → 1) before rolling into cochleates.more »« less

Molecular packing in light harvesting 2D assemblies of photocatalytic materials is a critical factor for solar-to-fuel conversion efficiency. However, structure–function correlations have yet to be fully established. This is partly due to the difficulties in extracting the molecular arrangements from the complex 3D powder averaged diffraction patterns of 2D lattices, obtained via in situ wide-angle X-ray scattering. Here, we develop a scattering theory formalism and couple it with a simple geometrical model for the molecular shape of chromophore 9-methoxy-N-(sodium hexanoate)perylene-3,4-dicarboximide (MeO-PMI) used in our study. Electrostatic Control of Shape Selection and Nanoscale Structure in Chiral Molecular Assemblies

How molecular chirality manifests at the nano- to macroscale has been a scientific puzzle since Louis Pasteur discovered biochirality. Chiral molecules assemble into meso-shapes such as twisted and helical ribbons, helicoidal scrolls (cochleates), or möbius strips (closed twisted ribbons). Here we analyze self-assembly for a series of amphiphiles, C_n-K, consisting of an ionizable amino acid [lysine (K)] coupled to alkyl tails with n = 12, 14, or 16 carbons. Dynamic origin of first and second order phase transitions in magnetization reversal of elliptical nanodots.

We study the magnetization reversal in elliptical nanodots with the external field applied exactly along the minor (hard) axis. By varying the magnitude of the applied field, several first and second order transitions take place and the system proceeds through magnetic configurations characterized by different symmetry properties. The dynamical matrix method is used to calculate the spin excitations as function of the applied field. This model system allows us to investigate the relationship between the singularities of the magnetization, the presence of soft spin excitations, and the symmetry properties of the static and dynamic magnetization fields. Mesoscale studies of ionic closed membranes with polyhedral geometries

Large crystalline molecular shells buckle spontaneously into icosahedra while multicomponent shells buckle into various polyhedra. Continuum elastic theory explains the buckling of closed shells with one elastic component into icosahedra. A generalized elastic model, on the other hand, describes the spontaneous buckling of inhomogeneous shells into regular and irregular polyhedra. By coassembling water-insoluble anionic (–1) amphiphiles with cationic (3+) amphiphiles, we realized ionic vesicles. Results revealed that surface crystalline domains and the unusual shell shapes observed arise from the competition of ionic correlations with charge-regulation. We explain here the mechanism by which these ionic membranes generate a mechanically heterogeneous vesicle.
