We consider the Bose-Hubbard model of atoms in an optical lattice potential when the atom-atom interactions are attractive. If the lowest-energy lattice sites are degenerate (such as in the homogeneous case), then, at a critical value of the interaction strength, a phase-coherent condensate becomes unstable to a quantum superposition such that the number distribution of each of the degenerate sites becomes double peaked. In the preceding Comment, the energy of the system is expanded at a van Hove singularity of one band as a function of changes in the field, the magnetization, and the Fermi energy. Unfortunately, not all the derivatives are properly defined at a van Hove singularity. This leads to the erroneous conclusion that the susceptibility is finite at the critical point. The correct result is that {ital M}{proportional to}({ital H}{minus}{ital H}{sub {ital c}}){sup 1/2}, in analogy to a Prokovsky-Talapov transition.

Low-temperature properties of the Hubbard chain with an attractive interaction

The thermodynamic Bethe-ansatz equations for the one-dimensional Hubbard model with attractive on-site interaction of the electrons are solved numerically at low temperatures. At low temperatures the dominant states consist of spin-paired electrons (Cooper-pair--like) and excitations of such pairs (without breaking up the singlet bound states). A critical field (energy required to depair a Cooper pair) is obtained at {ital T}=0 (note that the superconducting {ital T}{sub {ital c}}=0), which disappears for {ital T}{ne}0. Thermodynamic Bethe-ansatz equations for the Hubbard chain with an attractive interaction

The thermodynamic Bethe-ansatz equations for the one-dimensional Hubbard model are derived for an attractive on-site interaction of the electrons, extending in this way Takahashi's result for the repulsive Hubbard chain. The results are discussed in several special limits, e.g., interaction much larger than the hopping, U..-->..0 case, and the high- and low-temperature limits. The dominating states at low temperatures consist of spin-paired electrons (resembling Cooper pairs) and bound states of such pairs. The excitation spectrum and its properties are discussed in the context of superconductivity and resonant valence bonds.

Quantum q-breathers in a finite Bose-Hubbard chain: The case of two interacting bosons

We study the spectrum and eigenstates of the quantum discrete Bose-Hubbard Hamiltonian in a finite one-dimensional lattice containing two bosons. The interaction between the bosons leads to an algebraic localization of the modified extended states in the normal-mode space of the noninteracting system. Weight functions of the eigenstates in the space of normal modes are computed by using numerical diagonalization and perturbation theory. We find that staggered states do not compactify in the dilute limit for large chains.
