Ghost-free spectrum of a quantum string in SL(2,{ital R}) curved spacetime

The unitarity problem in curved spacetime is solved for the string described by the SL(2,{ital R}) Wess-Zumino-Witten (WZW) model. The spectrum is computed exactly and demonstrated to be ghost-free. The new features include (i) SL(2,{ital R}) left-right symmetry currents that have logarithmic cuts on the world sheet but that satisfy the usual local operator products or commutation rules, (ii) physical states consistent with the monodromy condition of closed strings despite the logarithmic singularity in the currents, and (iii) a new free boson realization for these currents which render the SL(2,{ital R}) WZW model completely solvable. {copyright} {ital 1996 The Americanmore » Physical Society.}« less

Folded strings falling into a black hole

We find all the classical solutions (minimal surfaces) of open or closed strings in [ital any] two-dimensional (2D) curved spacetime. As examples we consider the SL(2,[ital R])/[ital R] two-dimensional black hole, and any 4D black hole in the Schwarzschild family, provided the motion is restricted to the time-radial components. The solutions, which describe longitudinally oscillating folded strings (radial oscillations in 4D), must be given in latticelike patches of the world sheet, and a transfer operation analogous to a transfer matrix determines the future evolution. Conformally exact metric and dilaton in string theory on curved spacetime

Using a Hamiltonian approach to gauged Wess-Zumino-Witten models, we present a general method for computing the conformally exact metric and dilaton, to all orders in the 1/{ital k} expansion, for any bosonic, heterotic, or type-II superstring model based on a coset {ital G}/{ital H}. We prove the following relations: (i) For type-II superstrings the conformally exact metric and dilaton are identical to those of the nonsupersymmetric {ital semiclassical} bosonic model except for an overall renormalization of the metric obtained by {ital k}{r arrow}{ital k}{minus}{ital g}. Global analysis of new gravitational singularities in string and particle theories

We present a global analysis of the geometries that arise in noncompact current algebra (or gauged Wess-Zumino-Witten (WZW)) coset models of strings and particles propagating in curved space-time. The simplest case is the two-dimensional (2D) black hole. In higher dimensions these geometries describe new and much more complex singularities. For string and particle theories (defined in the text) we introduce general methods for identifying global coordinates and give the general exact solution for the geodesics for any gauged WZW model for any number of dimensions. Quantum-mechanical formulation of the electron-monopole interaction without Dirac strings

A relativistic wave equation is used to describe the interaction of an electron with a magnetic monopole at rest. A quasipotential, defined in terms of an integral involving the pseudoscalar potential phi/sub m/ = g/r, is used in this Dirac string-free formalism. This equation, written in nonrelativistic form, is used in conjunction with the appropriate angular momentum operators to obtain the Dirac quantization condition. An argument using gauge invariance shows that this condition is not modified by a relativistic treatment. A detailed comparison is made with conventional string theory, which is also formulated relativistically.
