We study one-dimensional quantum systems near the classical limit described by the Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation. The excitations near this limit are the well-known solitons and phonons. The classical description breaks down at long wavelengths, where quantum effects become dominant. Focusing on the spectra of the elementary excitations, we describe analytically the entire classical-to-quantum crossover. We show that the ultimate quantum fate of the classical KdV excitations is to become fermionic quasiparticles and quasiholes. Classical solitons for a one-dimensional many-body system with inverse-square interaction

We investigate solitons in the one-dimensional classical many-body system of particles interacting by an inverse-square pair potential. We use a combination of numerical results for finite systems, and exact results for the continuum limit, to deduce properties of solitons in the thermodynamic limit. Two remarkable conjectures are supported by these results, and the correspondence with the exact results for the quantum system is established.

Quantum solitons and their classical relatives. II. ''Fermion--boson reciprocity'' and classical versus quantum problem for the sine-Gordon system

Both quantum and classical sine--Gordon fields can be built out of the fundamental free neutral massive excitations, which quantally obey the Bose--Einstein statistics. At the roots of the ''boson-fermion reciprocity'' invented by Coleman, lies the spin 1/2 approximation of the underlying Bose system. By generalizing the coherent state methods to incorporate non-Fock quantum structures and to give account of the so-called boson transformation theory, we construct the carrier Hilbert space H/sub SG/ for quantum soliton operators. Quantum solitons and their classical relatives: Bethe Ansatz states in soliton sectors of the Sine--Gordon System

Previously we have found that the semiclassical sine--Gordon/Thirring spectrum can be received in the absence of quantum solitons via the spin 1/2 approximation of the quantized sine--Gordon system on a lattice. Later on, we have recovered the Hilbert space of quantum soliton states for the sine--Gordon system. In the present paper we present a derivation of the Bethe Ansatz eigenstates for the generalized ice model in this soliton Hilbert space. Quantum and Thermal Effects of Dark Solitons in a One-Dimensional Bose Gas

We numerically study the imprinting and dynamics of dark solitons in a bosonic atomic gas in a tightly confined one-dimensional harmonic trap both with and without an optical lattice. Quantum and thermal fluctuations are synthesized within the truncated Wigner approximation in the quasicondensate description. We track the soliton coordinates and calculate position and velocity uncertainties. We find that the phase fluctuations lower the classically predicted soliton speed and seed instabilities. Individual runs show interactions of solitons with sound waves, splitting, and disappearing solitons.
