Search for $2 ν β β$ decay of ${}^{136}{Xe}$ to the $0_{1}^{+}$ excited state of ${}^{136}{Ba}$ with the EXO-200 liquid xenon detector

EXO-200 is a single phase liquid xenon detector designed to search for neutrinoless ββ decay of ¹³⁶Xe to the ground state of ¹³⁶Ba. We report here on a search for the two-neutrino ββ decay of ¹³⁶Xe to the first 0⁺ excited state, 0⁺₁, of Ba136 based on a 100 kg yr exposure of ¹³⁶Xe. Using a specialized analysis employing a machine learning algorithm, we obtain a 90% CL half-life sensitivity of 1.7×10²⁴ yr. We find no statistically significant evidence for the 2νββ decay to the excited state resulting in a lower limit of T^2ν_1/2 (0⁺ → 0⁺₁) > 6.9 ×10²³more »« less

Measurement of transverse energy–energy correlations in multi-jet events in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 7 TeV$ using the ATLAS detector and determination of the strong coupling constant $α_{s} (m_{Z})$

High transverse momentum jets produced in pp collisions at a centre of mass energy of 7 TeV are used to measure the transverse energy–energy correlation function and its associated azimuthal asymmetry. The data were recorded with the ATLAS detector at the LHC in the year 2011 and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 158 pb^–1. The selection criteria demand the average transverse momentum of the two leading jets in an event to be larger than 250 GeV.
