Instability of a current sheet in the Earth's magnetotail has been investigated by two-dimensional fully kinetic simulations. Two types of magnetic configuration have been studied; those with uniform normal magnetic field along the current sheet and those in which the normal magnetic field has a spatial hump. The latter configuration has been proposed by Sitnov and Schindler [Geophys. Res. Lett. 37, L08102 (2010)] as one in which ion tearing modes might grow. Effect of the normal component of the magnetic field on the kink instability of the Earth's magnetospheric current sheet

The kink instability of a thin anisotropic current sheet is analyzed. It is shown that, for highly anisotropic current sheets, the instability growth rate is larger than that previously obtained using the Harris isotropic sheet model. The calculated oscillation period is a few minutes. The results of calculations are compared to the observed oscillations of the magnetotail current sheet. The results obtained indicate that kink instability can significantly contribute to large-scale variations in the structure of the Earth's magnetotail current sheet.

The influence of the shear magnetic field component, which is directed along the electric current in the current sheet (CS) of the Earth’s magnetotail and enhanced near the neutral plane of the CS, on the nonadiabatic dynamics of ions interacting with the CS is studied. The results of simulation of the nonadiabatic ion motion in the prescribed magnetic configuration similar to that observed in the magnetotail CS by the CLUSTER spacecraft demonstrated that, in the presence of some initial shear magnetic field, the north-south asymmetry in the ion reflection/refraction in the CS is observed. In this paper the tail current sheet is shown to be unstable to the kinetic current sheet kink instability (or simply the kinetic kink instability) in the cross-tail plane (y-z plane) and under similiar conditions that drive the tearing instability in the noon-midnight meridional plane (x-z plane). The tail current sheet is assumed to be a thin Harris current sheet ({rho}{sub i}/L{sub c} {approximately} 1) with equal ion and electron temperature. Streaming sausage, kink and tearing instabilities in a current sheet with applications to the Earth's magnetotail

In this paper, the growth rate and eigenmode structures of the streaming sausage and kink instabilities in a current sheet with a super-Alvenic flow are studied. Based on the linearized compressible profiles of the fastest growing mode which is either the streaming sausage mode or kink mode. The streaming sausage and kink instabilities, similar to the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability, are caused by the sheared plasma flow. The results show that for V/sub 0//sub m/ = 2 V/sub A//sub infinity/ the sausage mode grows faster than the kink mode when ..beta../sub infinity/<1.5.
