In this study, we review the relation between string theory and nonequilibrium physics based on our previously published work. First, we explain why a theory of quantum gravity and nonequilibrium statistical physics should be related in the first place. Then, we present the necessary background from the recent research in nonequilibrium physics. The review discusses the relationship of string theory and aging phenomena, as well as the connection between AdS/CFT correspondence and the Jarzynski identity. We also discuss the emergent symmetries in fully developed turbulence and the corresponding nonequilibrium stationary states. Topics in the AdS/CFT Correspondence: Precision tests with Wilson loops, quantum black holes and dualities

The Anti de Sitter/Conformal Field Theory (AdS/CFT) correspondence conjectures a mathematical equivalence between string theories and gauge theories. This correspondence and its generalizations allow to address difficult problems of strongly coupled field theory dynamics using weakly couple gravity. It also allows to tackle fundamental questions of gravity, such as black hole entropy, using field theories. The research supported by this grant focused on quantum aspects of the AdS/CFT correspondence at sub-leading level. Various results were obtained for expectation values of supersymmetric Wilson loops and for sub-leading entropy corrections of certain asymptotically AdS black holes.

In the AdS/CFT duality, it is often said that a local symmetry in a bulk theory corresponds to a global symmetry in the corresponding boundary theory, but the global symmetry can become local when one couples with an external source. As a result, the Gubser-Klebanov-Polyakov-Witten relation gives a response function instead of a Green function. We explore this point in detail using the example of holographic superconductors. We point out that these points play a crucial role in interpreting the holographic London equation properly.

Punctuated eternal inflation via AdS/CFT duality

The work is an attempt to model a scenario of inflation in the framework of anti-de Sitter/conformal field theory duality, a potentially complete nonperturbative description of quantum gravity. We study bubble geometries with de Sitter interiors within an ambient Schwarzschild anti-de Sitter black hole spacetime and the properties of the corresponding states in the dual conformal field theory. It is argued the viable bubble states can be identified with a subset of the black hole microstates. Improved hydrodynamics from the AdS/CFT duality

We generalize (linearized) relativistic hydrodynamics by including all order gradient expansion of the energy-momentum tensor, parametrized by four momenta-dependent transport coefficients, one of which is the usual shear viscosity. We then apply the AdS/CFT duality for N=4 SUSY in order to compute the retarded correlators of the energy-momentum tensor. From these correlators we determine a large set of transport coefficients of third- and fourth-order hydrodynamics. We find that higher order terms have a tendency to reduce the effect of viscosity.
