Here, the determination of the mass, composition, and geometry of matter outflows in black hole-neutron star and neutron star-neutron star binaries is crucial to current efforts to model kilonovae and to understand the role of neutron star merger in r-process nucleosynthesis. In this manuscript, we review the simple criteria currently used in merger simulations to determine whether matter is unbound and what the asymptotic velocity of ejected material will be. Stringy origin of neutrino masses within the minimal supersymmetric standard model

We present a gravity-induced'' seesaw mechanism, which accommodates neutrino masses ([ital m][sub [nu]][proportional to][ital m][sup 2][sub [ital u]]/[ital M][sub [ital I]], with [ital m][sub [ital u]] the corresponding quark mass and [ital M][sub [ital I]][congruent]4[times]10[sup 11] GeV) compatible with the MSW study of the Solar neutrino deficit within the minimal supersymmetric Standard Model (the grand desert with the gauge coupling unification at [ital M][sub [ital U]][congruent]2[times]10[sup 16] GeV). We show that for large radius ([ital R][sup 2]/[alpha][prime]=O(20)) Calabi-Yau spaces, threshold corrections ensure [ital M][sup 2][sub [ital U]]=[ital M][sup 2][sub [ital C]]/O(2[ital R][sup 2]/[alpha][prime]) and the magnitude of the non-renormalizable termsmore »« less
Neutrinos from SN 1987A - Implications for cooling of the nascent neutron star and the mass of the electron antineutrino

Data on neutrinos from SN 1987A are compared here with parameterized models of the neutrino emission using a consistent and straightforward statistical methodology. The empirically measured detector background spectra are included in the analysis, and the data are compared with a much wider variety of neutrino emission models than was explored previously. It is shown that the inferred neutrino emission model parameters are strongly correlated. The analysis confirms that simple models of the neutrino cooling of the nascent neutron star formed by the SN adequately explain the data.
