Title: BPS States, Crystals, and Matrices

Abstract

We review free fermion, melting crystal, and matrix model representations of wall-crossing phenomena on local, toric Calabi-Yau manifolds. We consider both unrefined and refined BPS counting of closed BPS states involving D2- and D0-branes bound to a D6-brane, as well as open BPS states involving open D2-branes ending on an additional D4-brane. Appropriate limit of these constructions provides, among the others, matrix model representation of refined and unrefined topological string amplitudes.

We construct a free fermion and matrix model representation of refined Bogomol'nyi-Prasad-Sommerfeld generating functions of D2 and D0 branes bound to a single D6 brane, in a class of toric manifolds without compact four-cycles. In appropriate limit we obtain a matrix model representation of refined topological string amplitudes. We consider a few explicit examples which include a matrix model for the refined resolved conifold, or equivalently five-dimensional U(1) gauge theory, as well as a matrix representation of the refined MacMahon function. Topological strings, strips and quivers

We find a direct relation between quiver representation theory and open topological string theory on a class of toric Calabi-Yau manifolds without compact four-cycles, also referred to as strip geometries. We show that various quantities that characterize open topological string theory on these manifolds, such as partition functions, Gromov-Witten invariants, or open BPS invariants, can be expressed in terms of characteristics of the moduli space of representations of the corresponding quiver. We describe physical phenomena associated with a class of transitions that occur in the study of supersymmetric three-cycles in Calabi-Yau (CY) threefolds. The transitions in question occur at real codimension one in the complex structure moduli space of the Calabi-Yau manifold. In type-IIB string theory, these transitions can be used to describe the evolution of a Bogomol'nyi-Prasad-Sommerfeld (BPS) state as one moves through a locus of marginal stability: at the transition point the BPS particle becomes degenerate with a supersymmetric two-particle state, and after the transition the lowest energy state carrying the same charges is a nonsupersymmetric two-particle state. BPS equations and non-trivial compactifications

We consider the problem of finding exact, eleven-dimensional, BPS supergravity solutions in which the compactification involves a non-trivial Calabi-Yau manifold, Y, as opposed to simply a T⁶. Since there are no explicitly-known metrics on non-trivial, compact Calabi-Yau manifolds, we use a non-compact “local model” and take the compactification manifold to be Y = M_GH × T², where MGH is a hyper-Kähler, Gibbons-Hawking ALE space. We focus on backgrounds with three electric charges in five dimensions and find exact families of solutions to the BPS equations that have the same four supersymmetries as the three-charge black hole. D-Branes in Curved Space

This thesis is a study of D-branes in string compactifications. In this context, D-branes are relevant as an important component of the nonperturbative spectrum, as an incisive probe of these backgrounds, and as a natural stringy tool for localizing gauge interactions. In the first part of the thesis, we discuss half-BPS D-branes in compactifications of type II string theory on Calabi-Yau threefolds. The results we describe for these objects are pertinent both in their role as stringy brane-worlds, and in their role as solitonic objects.
