Low-Lying ${Sc}^{44}$ Levels from the ${Sc}^{45} (p, d) {Sc}^{44}$ Reaction

We investigated the level structure of ⁴⁴Sc by measuring the energy spectrum of deuterons from the ⁴⁵Sc(p,d)⁴⁴Sc reaction at l7.5 Mev. Our results show deuteron groups corresponding to 11 levels below 1.7 Mev at the following energies: 0, 0.266, 0.344, 0.646, 0.748, 0.952, 1.025, 1.165, deuterons were obtained and show that the 6 lowest lying levels observed correspond to the pickup of an f_7/2 neutron from ⁴⁵Sc. A comparison is made with recent theoretical predictions.

The Pu²³⁶(n,f), Pu²³⁷(n,f) and Pu²³⁸(n,f) cross sections have been inferred by utilizing the surrogate ratio method. Targets of Pu²³⁹ and U²³⁵ were bombarded with 28.5-MeV protons, and the light ion recoils, as well as fission fragments, were detected using the STARS detector array at the K150 Cyclotron at the Texas A&M cyclotron facility. The (p, tf) reaction on Pu²³⁹ and U²³⁵ targets was used to deduce the σ (Pu²³⁶(n,f))/σ(U²³²(n,f)) ratio, and the Pu²³⁶(n,f) cross section was subsequently determined for En=0.5–7.5 MeV.
