We study finite-size effects for the gap of the quasiparticle excitation spectrum in the weakly interacting regime one-dimensional Hubbard model with on-site attraction. Two types of corrections to the result of the thermodynamic limit are obtained. Aside from a power law (conformal) correction due to gapless excitations which behaves as 1/N{sub a}, where N{sub a} is the number of lattice sites, we obtain corrections related to the existence of gapped excitations. Ground state of the extended one-dimensional Hubbard model: A Green's function Monte Carlo algorithm

A Monte Carlo method for obtaining exact ground-state properties of a class of Hubbard Hamiltonians is described. Results are presented for two special cases, nearest-neighbor Coulomb and on-site interactions, where previous exact results are known. The straightforward applicability of the method to a wider variety of interactions is demonstrated.

Binding energy of 1B{sub u} singlet excitons in the one-dimensional extended Hubbard-Peierls model

Using a symmetrized density-matrix renormalization-group formulation, we have investigated the electronic binding energy of the lowest optically allowed exciton (1B{sub u}) within an extended Hubbard-Peierls model (with parameters U, V, and {delta}) for conjugated chains with N=80 sites. Three symmetries, the C{sub 2}, spin parity, and electron-hole symmetries, have been applied to construct the projector operator. Analysis of our results on the ratios between exciton binding energies and exciton energies, sheds light on the current experimental and theoretical controversy on exciton binding for polyacetylene and polyparaphenylene vinylene. Extended one-dimensional Hubbard model: A small-cluster approach

The one-dimensional Hubbard model with nearest-neighbor hopping, first- and second-nearest-neighbor particle interactions, and one particle per site is reexamined by means of a small-crystal approach: an exact solution of a four-site cluster with periodic boundary conditions. Lines of symmetry crossing as well as singular lines and points are found. Analysis of correlation functions indicates that although there are smooth, strong changes as the parameters approach the values of the charge-to-spin-density-wave transition (a suggestion of an incipient second-order transition), the actual change involves a crossover between unrelated symmetries (a clear indication of a first-order transition). Superfluid, Mott-insulator, and mass-density-wave phases in the one-dimensional extended Bose-Hubbard model

We use the finite-size, density-matrix-renormalization-group (FSDMRG) method to obtain the phase diagram of the one-dimensional (d=1) extended Bose-Hubbard model for density {rho}=1 in the U-V plane, where U and V are, respectively, onsite and nearest-neighbor interactions. The phase diagram comprises three phases: superfluid (SF), Mott insulator (MI), and mass-density-wave (MDW). For small values of U and V, we get a reentrant SF-MI-SF phase transition. For intermediate values of interactions the SF phase is sandwiched between MI and MDW phases with continuous SF-MI and SF-MDW transitions.
