We derive formalism for determining 2 + J → 2 infinite-volume transition amplitudes from finite-volume matrix elements. Specifically, we present a relativistic, model-independent relation between finite-volume matrix elements of external currents and the physically observable infinite-volume matrix elements involving two-particle asymptotic states. The result presented holds for states composed of two scalar bosons. These can be identical or non-identical and, in the latter case, can be either degenerate or non-degenerate. Using 106 ×10⁶ ψ (3686) events collected with the BESIII detector, we measure multipole amplitudes for the decay ψ (3686) → γχ_c1,2 → γγ J/ψ beyond the dominant electric-dipole amplitudes. The normalized magnetic-quadrupole (M2) amplitude for ψ (3686) → γχ_c1,2 → γγ J/ψ and the normalized electric-octupole amplitudes for ψ ( 3686 ) → γχ_c2, χ_c2 → γJ/ψ are determined. The M2 amplitudes for ψ (3686) → γ χ_c1 and χ_c1,2 → γ J / ψ are found to differ significantly from zero and are consistent with theoretical predictions. Whether one is interested in accessing the excited spectrum of hadrons or testing the standard model of particle physics, electroweak transition processes involving multihadron channels in the final state play an important role in a variety of experiments. Presently the primary theoretical tool with which one can study such reactions is lattice QCD, which is defined in a finite spacetime volume. Measurement of the $I = 1 / 2$ $K π S$ -wave amplitude from Dalitz plot analyses of $η_{c} \to K \bar{K} π$ in two-photon interactions

We study the processes γγ→KS0K±πℓ and γγ→K+K-π0 using a data sample of 519 fb-1 recorded with the BABAR detector operating at the SLAC PEP-II asymmetric-energy e+e- collider at center-of-mass energies at and near the Υ(nS) (n=2, 3, 4) resonances. We observe ηc decays to both final states and perform Dalitz plot analyses using a model-independent partial wave analysis technique. This allows a model-independent measurement of the mass-dependence of the I=1/2 Kπ S-wave amplitude and phase. A comparison between the present measurement and those from previous experiments indicates similar behavior for the phase up to a mass of 1.5 GeV/c2. Inmore »« less
