Detecting Topological Order in a Ground State Wave Function

A large class of topological orders can be understood and classified using the string-net condensation picture. These topological orders can be characterized by a set of data (N,d{sub i},F{sub lmn}{sup ijk},{delta}{sub ijk}). We describe a way to detect this kind of topological order using only the ground state wave function. The method involves computing a quantity called the 'topological entropy' which directly measures the total quantum dimension D=id{sub i}{sup 2}.

Quasiadiabatic continuation of quantum states: The stability of topological ground-state degeneracy and emergent gauge invariance

We define for quantum many-body systems a quasiadiabatic continuation of quantum states. The continuation is valid when the Hamiltonian has a gap, or else has a sufficiently small low-energy density of states, and thus is away from a quantum phase transition. This continuation takes local operators into local operators, while approximately preserving the ground-state expectation values. We apply this continuation to the problem of gauge theories coupled to matter, and propose the distinction of perimeter law versus 'zero law' to identify confinement. We show that the fundamental time reversal invariant (TRI) insulator exists in 4 + 1 dimensions, where the effective field theory is described by the 4 + 1 dimensional Chern-Simons theory and the topological properties of the electronic structure is classified by the second Chern number. These topological properties are the natural generalizations of the time reversal breaking (TRB) quantum Hall insulator in 2 + 1 dimensions. Role of Magnetic Defects in Tuning Ground States of Magnetic Topological Insulators

Magnetic defects play an important, but poorly understood, role in magnetic topological insulators (TIs). For example, topological surface transport and bulk magnetic properties are controlled by magnetic defects in Bi₂Se₃-based dilute ferromagnetic (FM) TIs and MnBi₂Te₄ (MBT)-based antiferromagnetic (AFM) TIs. Despite its nascent ferromagnetism, our inelastic neutron scattering data show that a fraction of the Mn defects in Sb₂Te₃ form strong AFM dimer singlets within a quintuple block.
