Research into novel one-dimensional (1D) materials and associated structural transitions is of significant scientific interest. It is widely accepted that a 1D system with a short-range interaction cannot have 1D phase transition at finite temperature. In this paper, we propose a series of new stable carbon nanotubes by rolling up penta-graphene sheets, which exhibit fascinating well-defined 1D phase transitions triggered by axial strain. Our first-principles calculations show that such penta-graphene nanotubes (PGNTs) are dynamically stable by phonon calculations, but transform from a tri-layer structure to a highly defective single-walled nanotube at low temperature in molecular dynamics simulations. Granular material in a swirled container exhibits a curious transition as the number of particles is increased: At low densities, the particle cluster rotates in the same direction as the swirling motion of the container, while at high densities it rotates in the opposite direction. We investigate this phenomenon experimentally and numerically using a corotating reference frame in which the system reaches a statistical steady state. Semimetal-semiconductor transition and giant linear magnetoresistances in three-dimensional Dirac semimetal Bi{sub 0.96}Sb{sub 0.04} single crystals

Three-dimensional (3D) Dirac semimetals are new quantum materials and can be viewed as 3D analogues of graphene. Many fascinating electronic properties have been proposed and realized in 3D Dirac semimetals, which demonstrate their potential applications in next generation quantum devices. Bismuth-antimony Bi{sub 1−x}Sb{sub x} can be tuned from a topological insulator to a band insulator through a quantum critical point at x ≈ 4%, where 3D Dirac fermions appear. Here, we report on a magnetotransport study of Bi{sub 1−x}Sb{sub x} at such a quantum critical point. An unusual magnetic-field induced semimetal-semiconductor phase transition was observed in the Bi{sub 0.96}Sb{sub 0.04} single crystals.more »« less

Optical absorption of VO/sub 2/ and V/sub 2/O/sub 3/ films and ability to predict semiconductor--semimetal phase transitions in transition metal compounds

The optical absorption spectra of VO/sub 2/ and V/sub 2/O/sub 3/ films were studied using the two-thickness method at room temperature. The experimental results are explained in terms of transitions between energy bands formed by terms of the V/sup 3 +/ ion.(AIP)
Structure of the interface between ErAs, a cubic semimetal and AlAs, a tetrahedral semiconductor

Using {ital ab} {ital initio} local density calculations, the atomic structure of the (100) interface between ErAs, a semimetal with the sodium-chloride (SC) structure and AlAs, a semiconductor with the zinc-blende (ZB) structure is investigated. Several findings emerge: (1) Eight different high symmetry SC/ZB interfaces are identified and classified. (2) Several low energy interfaces, and combinations thereof, are found for epitaxial growth and for small superlattices. The energies of these interfaces change during epitaxy pointing to importance of kinetics. Calculated structural energies and Er {l_angle}100{r_angle} placements are compared with experimental Rutherford backscattering measurements. (3) The AlAs ZB structure buckles themore »« less
