Nano-engineered electron–hole exchange interaction controls exciton dynamics in core–shell semiconductor nanocrystals

A strong electron–hole exchange interaction (EI) in semiconductor nanocrystals (NCs) gives rise to a large (up to tens of meV) splitting between optically active (‘bright’) and optically passive (‘dark’) excitons. This dark–bright splitting has a significant effect on the optical properties of band-edge excitons and leads to a pronounced temperature and magnetic field dependence of radiative decay. Here we demonstrate a nanoengineering-based approach that provides control over EI while maintaining nearly constant emission energy. Magnitude of the magnetic exchange interaction in the heavy-fermion antiferromagnet CeRhIn₅

We have used high-resolution neutron spectroscopy experiments to determine the complete spin wave spectrum of the heavy fermion antiferromagnet CeRhIn₅. The spin wave dispersion can be quantitatively reproduced with a simple J₁-J₂ model that also naturally explains the magnetic spin-spiral ground state of CeRhIn5 and yields a dominant in-plane nearest-neighbor magnetic exchange constant J₀ = 0.74 meV. Our results pave the way to a quantitative understanding of the rich low-temperature phase diagram of the prominent CeTIn₅ (T = Co, Rh, Ir) class of heavy fermion materials.

Metamagnetism occuring inside a ferromagnetic phase is peculiar. Therefore, Sr₄Ru₃O₁₀, a T _C = 105 K ferromagnet, has attracted much attention in recent years, because it develops a pronounced metamagnetic anomaly below T _C for magnetic fields applied in the crystallographic ab-plane. The metamagnetic transition moves to higher fields for lower temperatures and splits into a double anomaly at critical fields H_c1 = 2.3 T and H_c2 = 2.8 T, respectively. MnCl₂(urea)₂ is a new linear chain coordination polymer that exhibits slightly counter-rotated Mn₂Cl₂ rhomboids along the chain-axis. The material crystallizes in the noncentrosymmetric orthorhombic space group Iba2, with each Mn(II) ion equatorially surrounded by four Cl^- that lead to bibridged ribbons. Urea ligands coordinate via O atoms in the axial positions. Hydrogen bonds of the Cl···H–N and O···H–N type link the chains into a quasi-3D network.
