In the framework of a 3-3-1 model with a minimal scalar sector, known as the economical 3-3-1 model, we study its capabilities of generating realistic quark masses. After a detailed study of the symmetries of the model, before and after the spontaneous symmetry breaking, we find a remaining axial symmetry that prevents some quarks from gaining mass at all orders in perturbation theory. Since this accidental symmetry is anomalous, we also consider briefly the possibility of generating their masses for nonperturbative effects. We propose a supersymmetric model of quark flavor symmetry based on SU(3){sub color} x SU(3){sub W} x U(1){sub X} x T{sup '} where T{sup '} (binary tetrahedral group) is a discrete flavor symmetry group. The third (heavy) generation of quarks are assigned to singlet representation of T{sup '} while light quark generations are treated differently and assigned to doublet representation of T{sup '}. The authors present theoretical calculations of the thermal conductivity for the accidental degeneracy and enlarged symmetry group models that have been proposed to explain the phase diagram of UPt{sub 3}. The order parameters for these models possess point nodes or cross nodes, reflecting the broken symmetries of the ground state. These broken symmetries lead to robust predictions for the ratio of the low-temperature thermal conductivity for heat flow along the {cflx c} axis and in the basal plane. Dynamical symmetry breakdown in two-dimensional quantum chromodynamics. I. Massless quarks

In this paper, the first of a trilogy on SU(N) quantum chromodynamics in 1 + 1 dimensions, the case of massless quarks is considered. Using an analog of the indefinite-metric formalism of Lowenstein and Swieca, we construct an explicit operator solution to this theory. This confirms Patrascioiu's conjecture that the SU(N) symmetry in this theory is broken down to S(U(1))/sup N/ and that there are N-1 massive quark-antiquark bound states in addition to a massless one.
