The rapid variation of charge and spin densities in atoms and molecules provides a severe test for local-density-functional theory and for the use of gradient corrections. In the study reported in this paper, we use the Langreth, Mehl, and Hu (LMH) functional and the generalized gradient approximation (GGA) of Perdew and Yue to calculate {ital s}-{ital d} transition energies, 4{ital s} ionization energies, and 3{ital d} ionization energies for the 3{ital d} transition-metal atoms. Solvation free energy calculations using continuum dielectric model for the solvent and gradient-corrected density functional theory for the solute

Electrostatic solvation free energies are calculated using a self consistent reaction field (SCRF) procedure that combines a continuum dielectric model of the solvent with both Hartree-Fock (HF) and density functional theory (DFT) for the solute. Several molecules are studied in aqueous solution. They comprise three groups: nonpolar neutral, polar neutral, and ionic. The calculated values of {Delta}G{sup e1} are sensitive to the atomic radii used to define the solute molecular surface, particularly to the value of the hydrogen radius. Density-gradient expansion of the kinetic-energy functional for molecules

The gradient expansion of the molecular kinetic-energy functional is assessed through numerical results for fourteen diatomic and polyatomic molecules. The correlation of the dissociation energies (D/sub e/) of molecules with the Weizsacker contribution to the kinetic energy (T/sub W/) is established through a plot of D/sub e//N/sup 2/ against T/sub W/ where N is the number of electrons. The conclusions support and extend the observations of Allan, et al. (J. Chem. Phys. 83, 4562 (1985)).
