Evolution of nontrivial Fermi surface features in the band structures of the homologous members ${Pb}_{5} {Bi}_{6} {Se}_{14}$ and ${Pb}_{5} {Bi}_{12} {Se}_{23}$

High-quality single crystals of (PbSe)₅(Bi₂Se₃)_3m were grown and analyzed by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. We report on ⁷⁷Se and ²⁰⁷Pb NMR shifts and nuclear spin-lattice relaxation measurements in the naturally formed heterostructure homology (PbSe)₅(Bi₂Se₃)_3m with m = 1 (Pb₅Bi₆Se₁₄) and m = 2 (Pb₅Bi₁₂Se₂₃). A distinct site-specific contribution has been detected for both nuclei as a function of temperature, which reveals an electronic changeover from a semiconducting (Pb₅Bi₆Se₁₄) to a semimetalliclike (Pb₅Bi₁₂Se₂₃) system with nontrivial band structure features near the Fermi level. Antiferromagnetic Kondo lattice in the layered compound ${CePd}_{1 - x} {Bi}_{2}$ and comparison to the superconductor ${LaPd}_{1 - x} {Bi}_{2}$

ZrCuSi₂-type CePd_1-xBi₂ crystals were obtained from excess Bi flux. Magnetic susceptibility measurements reveal that CePd_1-xBi₂ is a highly anisotropic antiferromagnet with transition temperature at 6 K, and a magnetic-field-induced metamagnetic transition at 5 T. An enhanced Sommerfeld coefficient of γ of 0.199 J-mol-Ce^-1K^-2 obtained from specific heat measurements suggests a moderate Kondo effect in CePd_1-xBi₂. In addition to the antiferromagnetic peak the resistivity curve shows a shoulder-like behavior which could be attributed to the presence of Kondo effect and crystal-electric-field effects in this compound. Raman and ARPES combined study on the connection between the existence of the pseudogap and the topology of the Fermi surface in ${Bi}_{2} {Sr}_{2} {CaCu}_{2} O_{8 + δ}$

Here, we study the behavior of the pseudogap in overdoped Bi₂Sr₂CaCu₂O_8+δ by electronic Raman scattering (ERS) and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) on the same single crystals. Using both techniques we find that, unlike the superconducting gap, the pseudogap related to the antibonding band vanishes above the critical doping p_c = 0.22 . Concomitantly, we show from ARPES measurements that the Fermi surface of the antibonding band is holelike below p_c and becomes electronlike above p_c. This reveals that the existence of the pseudogap depends on the Fermi surface topology in Bi₂Sr₂CaCu₂O_8+δ, and more generally, puts strong constraint on theories ofmore » the pseudogap phase.« less
