Robust $A$ -Type Order and Spin-Flop Transition on the Surface of the Antiferromagnetic Topological Insulator ${MnBi}_{2} {Te}_{4}$

Here, we present microscopic evidence of the persistence of uniaxial A-type antiferromagnetic order to the surface layers of MnBi₂Te₄ single crystals using magnetic force microscopy. Our results reveal termination-dependent magnetic contrast across both surface step edges and domain walls, which can be screened by thin layers of soft magnetism. The robust surface A-type order is further corroborated by the observation of termination-dependent surface spin-flop transitions, which have been theoretically proposed decades ago. To further investigate the interplay between ferromagnetism and topological insulators, thin films of the low-carrier topological insulator (Bi_x Sb_{1 - x})₂ Te₃ were deposited on the insulating ferromagnet EuS (100) in situ. AC susceptibility indicates magnetic anomalies between T ≈ 30 K and T ≈ 60 K , well above the Curie temperature T_C ≈ 15 K of EuS. When the Fermi level is close to the Dirac point and the surface state dominates the electric conduction, sharp increases in resistance with decreasing temperatures were observed concurrently with the magnetic anomalies. Onset of a Two-Dimensional Superconducting Phase in a Topological-Insulator–Normal-Metal ${Bi}_{1 - x} {Sb}_{x} / Pt$ Junction Fabricated by Ion-Beam Techniques

Inducing superconductivity in a topological insulator can lead to novel quantum effects. However, experimental approaches to turn a topological insulator into a superconductor are limited. Here, we report on superconductivity in topological insulator Bi_0.91Sb_0.09 induced via focused ion-beam deposition of a Pt thin film. The superconducting phase exhibits a Berezinski-Kosterlitz-Thouless transition, demonstrative of its two-dimensional character. From the in-plane upper critical field measurements, we estimate the superconducting thickness to be ~17 nm for a 5.5-μm-thick sample. Our results provide evidence that the interface superconductivity could originate from the surface states of Bi_0.91Sb_0.09.
