Resonances in coupled πK, ηK scattering from lattice QCD

Title: Resonances in coupled πK, ηK scattering from lattice QCD

Abstract

Coupled-channel πK and ηK scattering amplitudes are determined by studying the finite-volume energy spectra obtained from dynamical lattice QCD calculations. Using a large basis of interpolating operators, including both those resembling a qq-bar construction and those resembling a pair of mesons with relative momentum, a reliable excited-state spectrum can be obtained. Working at mπ = 391 MeV, we find a gradual increase in the JP = 0+ πK phase-shift which may be identified with a broad scalar resonance that couples strongly to πK and weakly to ηK. The low-energy behavior of this amplitude suggests a virtual bound-state that may be related to the κ resonance. A bound state with JP = 1- is found very close to the πK threshold energy, whose coupling to the πK channel is compatible with that of the experimental K*(892). Evidence is found for a narrow resonance in JP = 2+. Isospin–3/2 πK scattering is also studied and non-resonant phase-shifts spanning the whole elastic scattering region are obtained.

The scattering of spinning hadrons from lattice QCD

Hadron spectroscopy is predominantly the study of resonances that decay via the strong interaction into a multitude of stable hadrons, such as the pion. The vast majority of resonances decay via an intermediate hadron with non-zero intrinsic spin. In this thesis, I will present the results of scattering calculations featuring mesons with non-zero intrinsic spin. Before doing so, I will first give a brief introduction to QCD and review the framework necessary to perform lattice QCD calculations in Chapters 1 and 2. Tetraquark operators in lattice QCD and exotic flavour states in the charm sector

We present a general class of operators resembling compact tetraquarks which have a range of colour-flavour-spin structures, transform irreducibly under the symmetries of the lattice and respect other relevant symmetries. These constructions are demonstrated in lattice QCD calculations with light quarks corresponding to m_π = 391 MeV. Using the distillation framework, correlation functions involving large bases of meson-meson and tetraquark operators are computed in the isospin-1 hidden-charm and doubly-charmed sectors, and finite-volume spectra are extracted with the variational method.
