Photoemission spectra around the Fermi level (E{sub F}) of both a perovskite-type 3d{sup 1} Mott-Hubbard system Ca{sub 1{minus}x}SrVO{sub 3}, and a recently discovered layered-perovskite superconductor Sr{sub 2}RuO{sub 4} consist of the coherent band near E{sub F} and the precursor of the lower Hubbard band {approximately}2 eV below E{sub F}, which are common features in the quasi-particle spectra of correlated d-electron systems. The spectra give information on mass renormalization principally due to the on-site Coulomb interaction. The analyses of the effective masses in these correlated metals manifest other significant effects: momentum-dependence of the quasi-particle self-energy and hence the long-range exchange ormore » correlation.« less
Crystal-field splitting and the on-site Coulomb energy of La{sub x}Sr{sub 1{minus}x}TiO{sub 3} from resonant soft-x-ray emission spectroscopy

Resonant soft-x-ray emission spectroscopy was measured on La{sub x}Sr{sub 1{minus}x}TiO{sub 3} (x=0,&hthinsp;0.05,&hthinsp;0.10) in the Ti&hthinsp;2p energy region. At the Raman scattering of the e{sub g} resonance, the d-d transition whose Raman shift has an energy value of about 2.3 eV corresponds to the crystal-field splitting. On the other hand, at the t{sub 2g} resonance, the d-d transition whose Raman shift is about 2.2 eV is thought to be the transition reflecting half intra-atomic Coulomb energy. {copyright} {ital 1999} {ital The American Physical Society}

Resonant soft x-ray emission spectroscopy of V{sub 2}O{sub 3}, VO{sub 2} and NaV{sub 2}O{sub 5}

Resonant soft X-ray emission (RSXE) spectra of V2O3, VO2 and NaV2O5 were recorded for a series of excitation energies at resonances of the V L- and O K-absorption band. The V L- and O K-emission in these vanadium oxide bands possess considerable overlap. By resonant excitation we can tune the energy to the absorption thresholds, thereby eliminating this overlap. Hereby we obtain the V 3d and O 2p projected density-of-states of the valence band. Resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) is found to be weak in V2O3, which we explain as being due to its metallic character at room temperature. Vanadiummore »« less
Electronic structure of La{sub 5/3}Sr{sub 1/3}NiO{sub 4} by x-ray emission spectroscopy and resonant inelastic x-ray scattering

Here, we report a study of the electronic structure of La{sub 5/3}Sr{sub 1/3}NiO{sub 4} by x-ray emission spectroscopy (XES) and resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS). The combination of these techniques has permitted us to reveal a complete picture of the occupied and unoccupied states, and to identify various charge transfer transitions appearing as inelastic features in the RIXS spectra. The results add further information on the electronic excitations in this system, and show how the combination of XES and RIXS can be an important experimental tool to address basic physics of complex systems.
