A critical analysis is given in order to set up a well-defined perturbative expansion for Yang-Mills Euclidean theories within the axial gauge choice, using Cauchy principal value prescription to handle the spurious singularities. It is shown that, following a mathematically meaningful and unambiguous procedure, the exponential behavior of the Euclidean Wilson loop does not occur at variance with the covariant and planar gauge choices. A comparison with previous similar approaches and results is worked out in order to clearly understand the reasons for the breakdown of gauge invariance in the present case. Euclidean Wilson loops and minimal area surfaces in lorentzian AdS ₃

The AdS/CFT correspondence relates Wilson loops in N=4 SYM theory to minimal area surfaces in AdS ₅ × S ⁵ space. If the Wilson loop is Euclidean and confined to a plane (t, x) then the dual surface is Euclidean and lives in Lorentzian AdS ₃ c AdS ₅. Fractionally charged Wilson loops as a probe of {theta} dependence in CP{sup N-1} sigma models: Instantons versus large N

The behavior of Wilson loops with fractional charge is used to study the {theta} dependence of the free energy density {epsilon}({theta}) for the CP{sup 1}, CP{sup 5}, and CP{sup 9} sigma models in two space-time dimensions. The function {epsilon}({theta}) is extracted from the area law for a Wilson loop of charge q={theta}/2{pi}. For CP{sup 1}, {epsilon}({theta}) is smooth in the region {theta}{approx_equal}{pi} and well described by a dilute instanton gas throughout the range 0<{theta}<2{pi}. For CP{sup 5} and CP{sup 9} the energy exhibits a clear cusp and evidence for discrete, degenerate vacua at {theta}={pi}, as expected from large N arguments.more »« less

Finite Euclidean magnetic group and theta functions

In this paper, the Euclidean magnetic group of translations and rotations in a constant magnetic field is discussed in detail. The eigenfunctions of finite magnetic translations are shown to be related to the quasi periodic Jacobi theta functions, whose group theoretical properties under modular transformations are simple discussed. Invariance under finite rotations is very important; it leads to the two fundamental lattices of 60{degrees} and 90{degrees} already appearing in the theory of the phase transitions of Type II superconductors.

Partition function of a Wilson loop in a strongly coupled N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills plasma with fluctuations

We examine the one-loop partition function describing the fluctuations of the superstring in a Schwarzschild-AdS{sub 5}xS{sup 5} background. On the bosonic side, we demonstrate the one-loop equivalence of the Nambu-Goto action and the Polyakov action for a general world sheet, while on the fermionic side, we consider the reduction of the ten-dimensional Green-Schwarz fermion action to a two-dimensional world sheet action. We derive the partition functions of the world sheets corresponding to both straight and parallel Wilson lines. We discuss the cancellation of the UV divergences of the functional determinants in the thermal AdS background.
