Spectroscopy of Stripe Order in La{sub 1.8}Sr{sub 0.2}NiO{sub 4} Using Resonant Soft X-Ray Diffraction

Strong resonant enhancements of the charge-order and spin-order superstructure-diffraction intensities in La{sub 1.8}Sr{sub 0.2}NiO{sub 4} are observed when x-ray energies in the vicinity of the Ni L{sub 2,3} absorption edges are used. The pronounced photon-energy and polarization dependences of these diffraction intensities allow for a critical determination of the local symmetry of the ordered spin and charge carriers. We found that not only the antiferromagnetic order but also the charge-order superstructure resides within the NiO{sub 2} layers; the holes are mainly located on in-plane oxygens surrounding a Ni{sup 2+} site with the spins coupled antiparallel in close analogy to Zhang-Ricemore » singlets in the cuprates.« less

In the past few years neutron-scattering experiments have shown very intriguing stripe correlations of spins and holes in hole-doped La{sub 2}NiO{sub 4} and La{sub 2}CuO{sub 4}. As yet, no x-ray-diffraction experiment has confirmed the neutron results and the topic is still controversial. In this paper we report the observation of stripe correlations of holes by x-ray diffraction. The experiments were performed in Laue geometry at the hard-x-ray beamline BW5 at HASYLAB on a crystal of La{sub 1.775}Sr{sub 0.225}NiO{sub 4} which was previously studied by neutron diffraction. Using the MAPS spectrometer at the ISIS spallation source, we have measured the magnetic excitations of single-crystal samples of stripe-ordered La{sub 2-x}Sr{sub x}NiO{sub 4} with x=0.333 and 0.275. The full two-dimensional spin-wave dispersions were obtained using incident energies of 60 and 160 meV. To analyze the excitations, we have evaluated a spin-only Hamiltonian describing diagonal, site-centered stripes in the linear spin-wave approximation. Besides the superexchange energy J within antiferromagnetic domains, we have considered effective exchange couplings J{sub 1} and J{sub 2} across a charge stripe coupling second-neighbor Ni sites along Ni-O bond directions and along the plaquette diagonal, respectively.
