Dynamic Model of Super-Arrhenius Relaxation Rates in Glassy Materials

Super-Arrhenius relaxation rates in glassy materials can be associated with thermally activated rearrangements of increasing numbers of molecules at decreasing temperatures. We explore a model of such a mechanism in which stringlike fluctuations in the neighborhood of shear transformation zones provide routes along which rearrangements can propagate, and the entropy associated with critically long strings allows the rearrangement to be distributed stably in the surrounding material. We further postulate that, at low enough temperatures, these fluctuations are localized on the interfaces between frustration-limited domains, and in this way obtain a modified Vogel-Fulcher formula for the relaxation rate.

Atomic dynamics in strongly disordered matter, such as liquids and glasses, is characterized by correlated local dynamics. The conventional descriptions of atomic dynamics in condensed matter in terms of phonons and diffusion are inadequate for their dynamics, and instead we have to describe the dynamics in terms of spatial and temporal atomic correlations. Experimentally this means that it is insufficient to describe the dynamics through the dispersion of collective excitations in the dynamic structure factor, S(Q,E), where Q and E are the momentum and energy exchanges in scattering. The influence of shape on the glassy dynamics of hard nonspherical particle fluids. I. Dynamic crossover and elasticity

We extend and apply the center-of-mass version of the microscopic naïve mode coupling theory to study the ideal kinetic glass transition of dense fluids and suspensions composed of broad families of one-, two-, and three- dimensional hard nonspherical particles. A kinetic arrest diagram is constructed which indicates a dynamical crossover or onset of activated barrier hopping controlled transport. We find (quasi-) one-dimensional rods and rings form ideal glasses at the lowest volume fractions which decrease strongly with aspect ratio. Two-dimensional disks form ideal glasses at intermediate volume fractions which decrease slowly with the number of particles comprising the planar objects.more »« less

Peculiarities of distribution of gas-dynamic manifestations in mines of the Kuznetsk coal basin by days of the weekly cycle

The peculiarities of the origin of gas-dynamic events (rock, coal, and gas outbursts, methane ignition) in the Kuznetsk Basin mines in 1988 - 2004 are analyzed. A review is presented for information on recent accident and injury rate caused by disastrous gas-dynamic manifestations. The effect of bimodal frequency distribution of gas-dynamic events generated by explosion and burning of methane is revealed within a generalized weekly cycle.
