Here, we describe the gravity duals of four-dimensional N = 1 superconformal field theories obtained by wrapping M5-branes on a punctured Riemann surface. The internal geometry, normal to the AdS 5 factor, generically preserves two U(1)s, with generators (J⁺, J^–), that are fibered over the Riemann surface. The metric is governed by a single potential that satisfies a version of the Monge-Ampère equation. The spectrum of N = 1 punctures is given by the set of supersymmetric sources of the potential that are localized on the Riemann surface and lead to regular metrics near a puncture. Gravity duals of $$ \mathcal{N}=\left(0,\ 2\right) $$ SCFTs from M5-branes

We describe the general BPS system that governs the gravity duals of N=(0, 2) two-dimensional superconformal field theories in the low-energy limit of M5-branes on a four-manifold, M₄. In order to preserve supersymmetry, we restrict to cases where the four-manifold is embedded in a Calabi-Yau fourfold that is a sum of two line bundles over M₄. We further reduce the N=(0, 2) system to describe the gravity duals of SCFTs with N=(0,4) and N=(2,2) supersymmetry. We study the supersymmetric Wilson loops in the four-dimensional N=4 super Yang-Mills theory in the context of AdS/CFT correspondence. In the gauge theory side, it is known that the expectation value of the Wilson loops of circular shape with winding number k, W{sub k}(C), is calculable by using a Gaussian matrix model. In the gravity side, the expectation value of the loop is conjectured to be given by the classical value of the action S{sub D3} for a probe D3-brane with k electric fluxes as <W{sub k}(C)>=e{sup -S{sub D3}}. M5-brane defect and quantum Hall effect in AdS{sub 4}xN(1,1)/N=3 superconformal field theory

We study the d=11 gravity dual AdS{sub 4}xN(1,1) of the d=3 N=3 flavored Chern-Simons-matter theory. In the dual gravity side, we analyze the M5-brane filling AdS{sub 3} inside AdS{sub 4} and derive the quantized Hall conductivity of the dual gauge theory. In the gauge theory side, this M5-brane intersects the gauge theory at the codimension-one defect.

Using the thin-shell formalism we discuss the motion of domain walls in de Sitter and anti--de Sitter (AdS) time-dependent bulks. This motion results in a dynamics for the brane scale factor. We show that in the case of a clean brane the scale factor describes both singular and nonsingular universes, with phases of contraction and expansion. These phases can be understood as quotients of AdS spacetime by a discrete symmetry group. We discuss this effect in some detail, and suggest how the AdS/CFT correspondence could be applied to obtain a nonperturbative description of brane-world string cosmology.
