In this paper, excited states in ¹³⁷Xe have been studied by using the near-barrier, single-neutron transfer reactions ¹³C(¹³⁶Xe,¹²Cγ)¹³⁷Xe and ⁹Be(¹³⁶Xe,⁸Beγ)¹³⁷Xe in inverse kinematics. Particle-γ and particle-γγ coincidence measurements have been performed with the Phoswich Wall and Digital Gammasphere detector arrays. Evidence is found for a 13/2⁺₂ level (E = 3137 keV) and for additional, high-lying 3/2^- and 5/2^- states. The results are discussed in the framework of realistic shell-model calculations. Most theoretical approaches used in nuclear astrophysics to model the nucleosynthesis of heavy elements incorporate the so-called statistical model in order to describe the excitation and decay properties of atomic nuclei. One of the basic assumptions of this model is the validity of the Brink–Axel hypothesis and the related concept of so-called photon strength functions to describe γ-ray transition probabilities. We present a novel experimental approach that allows for the first time to experimentally determine the photon strength function simultaneously in two independent ways by a unique combination of quasi-monochromatic photon beams and a newly implemented γ–γ coincidence setup. This technique does not assume a priori the validity of the Brink–Axel hypothesis and sets a benchmark in terms of the detection sensitivity for measuring decay properties of photo-excited states below the neutron separation energy. The data for the spherical off-shell nucleus ¹²⁸Te were obtained for γ-ray beam-energy settings between 3 MeV and 9 MeV in steps of 130 keV for the lower beam energies and in steps of up to 280 keV for the highest beam settings. We present a quantitative analysis on the consistency of the derived photon strength function with the Brink–Axel hypothesis. The data clearly demonstrate a discrepancy of up to a factor of two between the photon strength functions extracted from the photoabsorption and photon emission process, respectively. In addition, we observe that the photon strength functions are not independent of the excitation energy, as usually assumed. Thus, we conclude, that the Brink–Axel hypothesis is not strictly fulfilled in the excitation-energy region below the neutron separation threshold (S_n = 8.78 MeV) for the studied case of ¹²⁸Te.

The g factor of the 15/2{sup -} state in {sup 137}Xe was measured for the first time by using a newly developed technique for measuring angular correlations with Gammasphere. Spins and parities were assigned to several levels in the N=83 isotones {sup 135}Te, {sup 136}I, {sup 137}Xe, and {sup 138}Cs. The calculated g factor in the shell-model frame is in good agreement with the measured one in the present work. Shell-model calculations also support our spin-parity assignments.

Few particle excitations of N=83 isotones {sup 134}Sb and {sup 135}Te from {sup 248}Cm fission

Gamma-ray cascades in the two- and three-valence-particle nuclei {sup 134}Sb and {sup 135}Te have been studied with Gammasphere using a {sup 248}Cm spontaneous fission source. Isotopic assignments were based in part on coincidences with {gamma} rays from complementary Rh and Ru fission partners. The {sup 134}Sb and {sup 135}Te level schemes have been considerably extended, with placement of many new high-energy {gamma} rays; delayed {gamma}-ray coincidences observed across a 0.51-{mu}s yrast isomer in {sup 135}Te were especially fruitful.
